Warming Drawer Buying Guide

What is a warming drawer?

A common feature of professional kitchens, warming drawers are used to keep food warm until it is time to serve. Warming drawers are also useful for heating plates and mugs. (If you warm the plates before you dish-up, your meal will stay warm for longer. This is particularly useful if you're hosting a dinner party for a large group of people).

Warming drawers are designed to be installed into a wall cavity, usually above the oven or below the cooktop. Using the handle, you can pull them out as you would a filing cabinet.

Most of today's warming drawers feature a hidden electronic control panel located in the top interior edge of the drawer, allowing it to sit flush with the surrounding cabinetry. If you already have stainless steel appliances installed in your kitchen, a stainless steel warming drawer will match beautifully. (If possible, it's recommended that you buy the same brand warming drawer as oven, so the handles match).

Why buy a warming drawer?

If you entertain frequently, a warming drawer is a useful investment. It will help to keep side dishes warm until it's time to serve the main meal, and it can also be used to heat plates.

Warming drawers have other uses, too. They can be used for defrosting food such as meat, bread and cake, and they provide the perfect environment for dough to rise. Bread rolls can be warmed to serve alongside your main meal, and you can also heat tacos and tortillas. Warming drawers are also useful for dissolving gelatine, melting chocolate, and keeping pancakes warm. Finally, you can even use your warming drawer for slow cooking meat, to give it a lovely soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Please measure the space available in your kitchen before you buy. Not all warming drawers are the same size, so please double check the dimensions to make sure it will fit.

Warming drawers range in height from 14cm to around 29cm. Before you buy, have a think about how many plates you need it to accommodate and whether or not you have any large serving platters you need to fit.

  • Fan - some warming drawers incorporate a fan to circulate heat evenly around the cavity.
  • Temperature range - most warming drawers offer variable temperature settings of between 30°C and 80°C.
  • Timer - some warming drawers come with an electronic timer which will automatically switch the heat off after a certain time period has elapsed.
  • Defrost - this setting is perfect for quickly and safely defrosting frozen food.
