Kitchen Renovations with ARC and Euromaid

Top 10 Kitchen Renovation Tips

Renovating a kitchen can be tough, especially for first-timers. So we've collaborated with Euromaid and Arc Appliances to bring you a quick guide that'll hopefully help you achieve a stress-free, as possible, kitchen reno, whether it's for your family or your future tenants.

We'll start with our top 10 kitchen design and renovation tips.

1. Be Overly Prepared

When it comes to renovating a house, you can never be too prepared. Keep plans, designs and any important documents handy and make sure you plan out everything in detail before you even think about removing walls or benches. It's also beneficial to organise all the kitchen items you're keeping (dishes, placemats, small appliances, etc.), in labelled boxes, so come 'moving in' day you're ready to go.

2. Utilise your space efficiently

A lot of kitchen designs will see the cupboards and cabinets stop around 500mm from the ceiling, which leaves a lot of wasted space. Think about installing taller cabinets and cupboards to combat this issue. Not only will you achieve more storage space, but floor-to-ceiling kitchens are more aesthetically pleasing.

3. Prepare the area for larger appliances

Before choosing your appliances, it's essential to prepare their intended spaces. Ensure each appliance (oven, fridge, rangehood, cooktop, etc.) has sufficient clearance that conforms to Australian Standards, and that there'll be enough ventilation around appliances such as wall ovens and refrigerators. Be prepared to make little modifications to cabinets and benches to allow for cables, plugs and hoses.

4. Relieve some stress with cooking appliance packages

Picking out the perfect oven can be stressful enough without having to worry about choosing a matching rangehood or cooktop. Purchasing a cooking package will help make it easier by taking away having to make two, or even three different decisions. Buying a cooking pack also ensures each appliance matches flawlessly for a more uniform look. It’s important to remember, however, to make sure that the package you select will work for you. Ensure the oven has the features you want, the cooktop is the correct size, and the rangehood is the style you are after.

5. Think about benchtop space

How many small appliances and other items currently sit on your benchtop? Are you struggling to find preparation space? It's all well designing your kitchen around aesthetics and beauty, but practicality should be high on your list. Too little bench space and you'll start to very quickly resent your new kitchen, too much, and you’re potentially wasting a lot of space.

6. Remember the words 'smooth workflow'

As most kitchens are usually the hub of the home, it's vital to ensure each workstation - stove, fridge, sink and bench - is comfortable to get to and practical to use. Especially in bigger kitchens, having to continually walk from one end of the kitchen to the other can become very tiresome. The 'kitchen triangle' can help reduce the amount of unnecessary moving and can be the difference between a much-loved kitchen, and a shunned space.

7. Put thought into cabinet dimensions

Sometimes following the minimum standard of measurements can seem like the easier and cheaper option; but it's not necessarily the best, especially if you have the space to add a few more millimetres. For example, the minimum depth for cabinets is 600mm. Keeping this depth limits not only storage space but also limits the number of options you have for built-in appliances such as sinks, taps and cooktops.

8. An adequate washing up area can make a huge difference

Choosing the right sink can make a mammoth of a difference, especially in smaller kitchens. If you don't have the benchtop space for a wide tub, look at deep bowl sinks. If attached drainers are out of the question due to space, select ones with attachable drainers and other accessories such as boards and colanders. Sinks and taps are the most used item in your kitchen, so buy a good quality sink and tap that not only looks good but works well with your new kitchen and suits your everyday needs.

9. Choose appliances with the same finishes

If you're going for a more contemporary look, make sure you pick appliances that match: steels with steels, whites with whites, and colours with colours. Having the same colours throughout will also give the illusion of a bigger kitchen. When selecting white finished appliances, note that these appliances look great in a coloured kitchen and not so much in kitchens with white polyurethane walls. Although a brilliant white colour, your white appliances may not look completely white against this finish.

10. Use reliable brands, suppliers and installers

Cheaper isn't always better, and the sayings, "you get what you pay for" and "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is", are more often than not correct. Ensuring you use reliable and reputable companies can help make renovations stress-free, and possibly even enjoyable.

When talking to the kitchen company ask if the trades are included, if not, ask if they can provide a separate quote for any tradespeople. If you're happy with the given quote, it's best to stick with the tradespeople they've recommended, as they will be able to coordinate with them more efficiently than if you were to organise your own.

Kitchen Renovation FAQs

Can I change from gas to hotplate, and vice versa?

Yes, that's possible.

If you're changing from gas to electric, a separate circuit will need to be installed by your electrician, and the gas capped off by your gas technician. However, if you're changing from electric to gas, then a separate gas line needs to run from the outside to the cooktop's location. Bottle gas "LP Gas" needs to be installed outside and piped into the kitchen the same way, there are no options to use bottles inside the home at all, regardless of size, so please talk to your plumber about LP gas connections.

What is the recommended cooktop to rangehood clearance?

By Australian standards for electric cooktops, the distance between the cooktop and the underside of the rangehood is:

Minimum height of 600mm

Maximum height of 650mm

By Australian standards for gas cooktops, the distance between the top of the cooktop trivet and the underside of the rangehood is:

Minimum height of 650mm

Maximum height of 750mm

Do I need an electrician to install a 10 amp plug-in oven?

When you are replacing like for like: for example, you have a 10 amp oven with plug and lead attached, and there is a 10 amp power point already available, you can connect the oven yourself saving you money. However, if the original oven is hardwired and you don't have the correct connections available, an electrician will need to install a 10 amp power point for you.

What is the 'kitchen triangle'?

Your kitchen layout should revolve around your main workstations - refrigerator, stove, sink and benchtop space. And the location of these stations should form a triangle, and sit on each of the triangle vertices. While the triangle keeps everything nearby, for a more practical layout, adhering to it too stringently can cause complications. It's always best to work with your designer, to create the perfect kitchen layout for your home.

What are the best benchtop materials to use for undermount sinks?

Undermount sinks are best installed in kitchens with masonry benchtops, to avoid exposing timber or laminate benches to water damage.

How much space is sufficient enough for refrigerator ventilation?

It's a little hard to give an exact overall dimension, as suppliers will recommend different airspace requirements for different models available. But a good rule of thumb is to allow a minimum of 20mm all the way around your fridge. Some products, like wine cabinets, are not meant to be built-in and will have the correct install information in its manual. Always refer to the product's manual.

I don't have enough space for a canopy rangehood; what do you recommend?

If a canopy rangehood is out of the question, there are more compact options such as slideouts where you will see just a slim fascia panel, generally in a stainless steel finish. You can have your builder remove this panel and replace it with a custom panel to help blend the appliance into your cupboards.

Another compact style is built under models where the rangehood is built into your cupboard from the underside. These models are entirely hidden.

My old appliances still work, can I reuse them?

We all love to save money where we can, but in a kitchen renovation expenses shouldn't be sacrificed when it comes to new appliances. Keeping old appliances can end up costing you more in the future as they usually require more to maintain and run. They can also look incredibly outdated amongst your new kitchen design. Imagine installing a 12-year-old white oven and cooktop into your new white poly kitchen. The old appliances will seem yellowish - not a good look.

How important is having matching appliances?

Depending on the style of your new kitchen, matching appliances can make the difference between 'high-end' and 'budget.' Cooking appliances packs make it easy to find perfectly matching products.

Do you have any tips for a cheap and quick kitchen reno fix?

If knocking down walls, replacing cabinets and building an entirely new kitchen is off the table, upgrading your current appliances, replacing light fixtures and joinery, as well as a new lick of paint will noticeably lift your old space without having to spend an arm and a leg.
