What is Boxing Day?
Boxing Day falls on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day. It is a public holiday, with schools and most businesses closed for the day. Boxing Day originated in England, sometime between the 1600’s and 1800’s. On the first weekday following Christmas day, servants would be given a box of small gifts and coins by their employers in recognition of their service during the year. They would also be given the day off to spend with their families, because they would have been working serving their ‘masters’ on Christmas day itself.
Over time, the nature of the day changed, but the name stuck. Retailers, finding themselves with excess seasonal produce following Christmas, discounted it immediately following the holiday. The practice took hold, and evolved into the Boxing Day Sales that are now widespread across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK.
What does Boxing Day represent for Australians?
A few exciting things happen around Australia on Boxing Day. There’s the Boxing Day Test cricket match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Sailing enthusiasts get around the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Movie buffs retreat from the heat with a new release at the cinema. And, of course, people go shopping, in-store and online. It’s a post-Christmas sales extravaganza where stores offer their excess stock at reduced prices. Shops open early and welcome thousands of customers who are looking to bag a Boxing Day deal.
How long do Boxing Day sales last?
Major retailers in fashion, tech, travel, and homewares will offer discounts for one day only. Others may offer discounts for four to seven days by calling it "Boxing Day Week".
