Welcome to the Legend Blimp!

Launched in October 2014, Appliances Onlines Legend Blimp is 39 metres long and 11 metres wide - it's the largest (and only!) blimp currently flying in the Southern hemisphere. The Legend Blimp never gets deflated, and the 13-strong crew includes two qualified pilots, two licensed aviation mechanics, a crew chief and a clerk, as well as ground staff that includes watch keepers and ground crew.

  • The Legend Blimp's stability and slow cruising speed means we get to capture amazing aerial photography and video footage that captures the beauty of the Australian scenery.

  • Since its maiden voyage in October 2014, the Legend Blimp has been busy visiting Melbourne and Sydney, but we have plans to visit many more places this year!

  • The best way to keep track on the Legend Blimp is on our Facebook, Twitter & Instagram pages.

About the Legend Blimp

  • What is a blimp?

A blimp is a kind of non-rigid airship, also known as a dirigible. First taking flight in the mid-1800s, airships were pioneered by the German Zeppelin Company in the early twentieth century, until fixed-wing aircraft eventually took over.

  • How does a blimp fly?

Unlike a hot air balloon, a blimp is inflated with helium rather than air to make it float. Also unlike a hot air balloon, a blimp has two engines, and can be steered. A balloon uses contact with the ground to bring it slowly to a halt when landing. In contrast, a blimp is landed in a controlled fashion and brought to a halt by its ground crew, before being manoeuvred to a special mooring mast where it is tethered until its next flight.

  • How safe are blimps?

Airships have the best safety record of any type of aircraft. The Appliances Online Lightship has aircraft engines on each side, and its instrument panels and controls are used by certified and experienced pilots during flight. It travels with a 13-strong ground support crew, with at least one person monitoring it 24/7. Pilots are in constant communication with the ground crew and receive clearance from Air Traffic Controllers all over the country.

  • How big is the Legend Blimp?

The Legend Blimp is 11 metres wide, 13.4 metres tall, and 39 metres long. To put that in perspective, it's approximately the length of three buses, parked bumper to bumper. Five Appliances Online Lightships stacked on top of one another would equal the height of the Sydney Opera House.

  • How much helium does the Legend Blimp use?

The Appliances Online Legend Blimp has a volume of 68,000 cubic feet, or approximately 1925.5 cubic metres. That's enough to fill up 136,000 party balloons.

  • How much fuel does the Legend Blimp use?

Airships are super energy efficient compared to jumbo jets. The Appliances Online Legend Blimp uses less fuel in two weeks of operation than a 747 uses to taxi to the end of the runway for take-off! For the equivalent fuel that a 737 uses to fly from Melbourne to Sydney, the airship could travel for 3 months.

  • How fast does the Legend Blimp go?

The Appliances Online Lightship's maximum speed is approximately 45 mph (72 km/h). It has flown as fast as 57 mph (92 km/h) with a tail wind and as slow as 1 mph (1.6km/h) in a head wind.

  • How high does the Legend Blimp go?

The Legend Blimp normally flies at 1000 feet (300m) above the earth, but it can go as high as 10,000 feet (3 km)!

  • How many people can the Legend Blimp carry?

The Legend Blimp can carry one pilot and 2-3 passengers depending on weight. It has a maximum load (known as “useful lift”) of approximately 1000 lbs (454 kg).

  • Who built the Appliances Online Legend Blimp?

The Legend Blimp was built by the US-based Van Wagner Airship Group, the world’s largest operator of airships.

  • Why is it sometimes called a Lightship?

The Legend Blimp is illuminated from inside by two 1000 watt lightbulbs, using proprietary technology from Van Wagner Airship Group. This makes it highly visible during night flights.
