Type: This selection showcases the versatility of home coffee machines available in Australia. Manual espresso machines dominate with five models, perfect for hands-on coffee fans who enjoy controlling (and taking credit for!) every aspect of the brewing process. Two automatic espresso machines make the list, as do two ultra-convenient coffee pod machines. One coffee brewer rounds out the list for those who prefer traditional drip filter black coffee, as opposed to the espresso-based coffees made by the other nine machines on the list. If you’re not sure which type will be the best coffee machine for you, read How to choose the right coffee machine for your home.
Width: Depending on the size and layout of your kitchen, bench space can be a factor in choosing your coffee machine. The machines on this list range from ultra-slim to substantial. The narrowest option is the DeLonghi Nespresso Citiz at just 129.5mm, with the Smeg Lavazza close behind at 157mm - both capsule machines, and both ideal for smaller kitchens. The Smeg Bean To Cup is impressively narrow for an automatic espresso maker at 180mm, while the DeLonghi Magnifica Evo measures 240mm. Mid-range manual options like the Sunbeam Mini Barista (295mm) sit comfortably on most benchtops, while the widest model, the Sunbeam Café Series Duo at 439mm, is better suited to serious home baristas who want their coffee companion to take pride of place on the breakfast bar.
Brand: Breville leads the pack with three manual models, reflecting their strong position in the Australian coffee machine market. Smeg has three machines: a manual, a pod, and a drip filter. DeLonghi appears twice, with a fully automatic and a capsule model. Sunbeam rounds out the list with two manual espresso machines.
Warranty: Most manufacturers represented on the list have a two-year warranty on coffee makers. The exception is Sunbeam, which has one-year warranties on both its models.
Built-in grinder: Five models feature integrated coffee grinders: the Smeg Bean To Cup (stainless steel conical burr, 5 settings), DeLonghi Magnifica Evo (conical burr, 13 settings), Breville Barista Express Impress (precision conical burr), Breville Barista Express (conical burr, 16 settings), and Breville Barista Pro (precision conical burr). Having a built-in grinder saves valuable benchspace and ensures your coffee beans are ground fresh immediately before extraction, maximising flavour and crema. The remaining models either use pre-ground coffee or capsules.
Built-in milk frother/steam wand: All manual espresso machines feature steam wands for milk frothing: the Sunbeam Mini Barista, Breville Barista Express Impress, Breville Barista Express, Sunbeam Café Series Duo, and Breville Barista Pro all include manual steam wands for texturing milk, as does the semi-automatic Smeg Bean To Cup. The DeLonghi Magnifica Evo fully automatic machine features the LatteCrema system with a 220ml carafe for automatic milk frothing. The pod machines and drip filter brewer don't have milk frothing capabilities, though the DeLonghi Nespresso Citiz is available in a bundle with a separate Aeroccino milk frother.
Water tank capacity: Tank capacity ranges from 1.0L in the DeLonghi Nespresso Citiz up to 3.0L in the Sunbeam Café Series Duo. Most manual espresso machines feature 2.0L tanks, which strike a good balance between requiring frequent refills and taking up excessive space. The Smeg Bean To Cup and Smeg Drip Filter both offer 1.4L. Larger water tanks mean less interruption to your coffee-making routine - handy if you're entertaining or have multiple coffee drinkers in the household.
Pump pressure: Most espresso machines on this list operate at 15 Bar pump pressure, which is the industry standard for quality extraction. The exceptions are the Smeg Bean To Cup and DeLonghi Nespresso Citiz, both delivering professional 19 Bar pressure for concentrated, crema-rich espresso. Higher pressure helps extract maximum flavour from coffee beans and creates that signature velvety crema layer.
Price: The models on this list span three distinct price ranges and are classified in relation to the other models on this list. Far more expensive coffee machines are available, but this list features our most popular - and therefore often more affordable - models.
Budget-friendly options (under $400) include the Smeg Drip Filter, Sunbeam Mini Barista, DeLonghi Nespresso Citiz, and Smeg Lavazza. Mid-range machines (under $1,100) are the Sunbeam Café Series Duo, Smeg Bean To Cup, and Breville Barista Express. High-end models (over $1,100) feature the Breville Barista Express Impress at $1,299, DeLonghi Magnifica Evo at $1,499, and the Breville Barista Pro at $1,499.

What customers say:
“I owned the breville oracle touch before this machine, it sadly died after 6 years. I know I wanted another breville but didn’t want to spend as much again This machine looks great and makes a great coffee. The only thing that annoys me is it does not hold as much water as my old machine , it also purges a lot of water so emptying the tray a lot more . But in saying that my old machine was bigger and nealy $3000 more So for a little more effort and a huge saving the machine is a gem! And so pretty” - Acabella, September 2024
