How to stay healthy this winter
June 4th, 2014
Winter has arrived at last, but it’s not quite what everyone was expecting.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a somewhat warmer and drier winter across the country, making much of the advice we’d usually give at this time about warming winter meals and doing laundry in damp, cool conditions a bit moot.
Still, some things never change, and with the change in seasons, a brand new set of germs is bringing sniffles and coughs to all the local public transport services, not to mention the Appliances Online offices.
With that in mind, here are a few ways you can stay healthy this winter, and the appliances that will help:
Wash germs and allergens out of your clothes
When there’s a plague going through your household, you need to keep everyone’s clothes hygienically clean to keep the germs from spreading to everybody.
Some washing machines include special antibacterial modes that wash at extra-high temperatures to kill more germs (though they can be a bit rough on delicate clothes!).
If your washer doesn’t have a dedicated antibacterial mode, you can manually set up something similar by selecting a high-temperature wash.
In a pinch, you could also use a washing machine with a Baby Care or similar setting – if it can deal with baby clothes and dirty nappies, it should be fine for a few sniffles.
Keep a supply of fresh, healthy food handy
For many people, the winter instinct is to cook up big batches of warm comfort food and save the leftovers to last the week.
And while all fridges do a great job of keeping leftover food from spoiling, the longer you leave food in there, the more likely it’ll go bad.
That’s where a fridge with a Silver Nano deodoriser system comes in handy. The microscopic silver particles help to prevent bacteria from reproducing inside your fridge, keeping your fresh food healthier for longer.
Wash up hygienically
If someone’s sick in your home, you want to be certain that they don’t share their germs around, either during or after meal times.
To keep a hygienic kitchen, you’ll want to thoroughly wash up any dishes used by your poor invalid, to prevent the spread of germs.
That’s where a dishwasher with an antibacterial mode comes in handy – the intense clean should deliver pristine crockery, so the rest of your household stays healthy.
Much like the washing machine example above, if your dishwasher doesn’t have dedicated antibacterial setting, you can manually sort out something similar by using a high-temperature wash.
Preserve your food’s nutrients
This is probably worth an entire blog in itself, but the broad strokes are that you want the maximum amount of nutrition to get into your body, and the minimum amount of either germs or gross fats and oils.
One of the healthiest ways to cook those winter favourites is to use a steam oven.

Every bit as versatile as a typical convection or gas oven, a steam oven also helps preserve more of your food’s nutrition.
Clean the air and breathe easy
No-one’s happy when airborne germs are blowing on the breeze. And when you and your loved ones are huddled indoors, it’s much easier for these germs to spread.
To keep your home clean of bacteria, you’ll need some means of keeping the air clean.
Any air treatment appliances in your home, from air conditioners to air purifiers, should be kept clean though the winter, and their filters should be regularly checked and cleaned as well, so they can remain at optimal effectiveness.
Care for your floors to get rid of microbes
If your home has carpeting, rugs or soft upholstery, it’s very easy for germs to find a home for themselves between their soft fibres.
And even smooth surfaces such as tiles and kitchen benchtops can harbour an invisible layer of microbes if they’re not well cared-for.

Expelling these germs from your home requires constant vigilance, a touch of elbow grease, and perhaps a sturdy vacuum cleaner for soft surfaces (be sure to use the attachments to get right into the nooks and crannies, and always clean the filters) and a steam mop for hard surfaces.
For a deeper carpet clean, you can also use a carpet washer – their detergents can do a great job of cleaning stubborn dirt out, and make the carpet’s fibres less inviting to microbes!
Add extra nutrition to your diet
A great way to pack a lot of nutrition into your diet in one go is to combine the goodness of multiple fruits and veggies into a single nourishing juice. And for that, you’ll need a juicer.
Your best bet is to use a cold press juicer, as these extract juice from fruit and veggies without losing nutrition through heat.
