For coffee machines under $900, your main options are manual espresso makers, capsule/pod machines like Nespresso, and some basic automatic espresso machines without all the bells and whistles. Fully automatic machines that grind beans and brew automatically tend to have higher price tags.
Manual espresso machines require more hands-on effort compared to automatic models, but they allow you to perfect your barista skills. You'll need to grind the beans, dose and tamp the grounds, brew the shot, and froth milk if desired. However, they produce excellent espresso flavours.
For affordable Nespresso-style capsule machines, you’ll get ease of use as standard. It really doesn’t get simpler than popping a capsule in the machine. Some won’t have any milk frothing capabilities built-in but may be sold in a bundle with an accompanying Aeroccino manual milk frother.
Higher end Nespresso makers, meanwhile, have milk frothers or steam wands built-in, along with larger water reservoirs, and adjustable brew strengths and automatic presets for different styles of milk-based coffee.
Some budget manual and automatic espresso machines have built-in grinders, though not all. For those that don’t, you'll need to buy a separate grinder to get fresh ground coffee at home, so factor that into your budget.
Appliances Online has a great range of coffee machines to fit all budgets, from leading brands like Breville, Sunbeam, Smeg and DeLonghi. As well as having great prices (and a Price Match Guarantee), Appliances Online offers free delivery* across Australia on kitchen appliances.
It depends on your priorities. Capsule machines like Nespresso are extremely easy to use but limited to their coffee pod range. Manual machines take more effort to master but allow you to experiment with any fresh coffee beans to achieve your perfect coffee.
For great cappuccinos and lattes at home, it's worth spending a bit more to get an espresso machine with an automatic milk frother or steam wand. This beats having to froth milk manually.
A lot of affordable coffee machines have a black finish, with white and stainless steel also popular. Some retro-look models have pastel or brightly coloured finishes. For the most inexpensive coffee makers, full plastic housing is common to keep costs down, though brushed stainless steel still looks more premium even at lower price points.
At a minimum, you'll need a quality grinder to grind fresh beans and a tamper for preparing the portafilter. A milk frothing pitcher is ideal for artisan drinks as well. Sometimes these accessories are included with the machine, but sometimes you’ll need to buy them separately.
Yes. Most reputable brands, including Breville, Sunbeam and DeLonghi, have 1 or 2-year warranties on their budget coffee machines in Australia. For peace of mind, you can often choose to buy a Customer Care Plan which extends this cover upon expiry of the manufacturer’s warranty.
