All things cooking, cleaning, chilling and more for the hard-working heart of your home.
Built-in ovens are standard in many Aussie kitchens these days, but for some people, reasons of ease, cost, or aesthetic preferences can make a stove–or freestanding cooker–a better choice for their kitchen.
If you’re looking for a new stove but don’t have the time or inclination to compare and contrast dozens of different cooking appliances, a good shortcut is to see what others have been buying.
This list provides a handy snapshot of the standard-sized 60cm electric freestanding cookers that have been making their way into many Australian homes in 2024.
Before we look at the list, here’s a quick overview of these popular stoves.
Oven fuel: All the stoves on this list have both electric ovens and electric cooktops. Many other stoves with electric ovens have gas cooktops (dual fuel stoves). Gas stoves and gas built-in ovens are increasingly rare.
Size: These stoves are all around the same size, with a width of between 54-60cm. While height and depth may vary slightly, width is usually the key dimension to be aware of with stoves, because it’s likely that it will need to fit into an existing space between kitchen cabinet benchtops. If you’re looking for something larger, check out oversized stoves over 60cm width.
Oven capacity: Considering they have similar widths, the capacities of the stoves on this list vary considerably, between 63 and 82 litres. Interestingly, the models with the smallest widths did not have the lowest capacities, highlighting that you can fit substantial cooking space into relatively narrow spaces.
Price: The dollar symbols indicate where each model sits on the price scale in relation to this list, from lower cost ($) to higher cost ($$$). Just click the links to see the prices and full specs.
Cooktop/burners: Each stove on this list has four electric burners. The three cheaper models have four separate solid electric burners (as opposed to older style coils). The two higher priced stoves have flat ceramic glass cooktops, with the Bosch model using induction technology. Induction cookers do come with higher price tags, but it is safer and more energy efficient, making it cheaper to run than traditional cooktops.
Colour: The two higher priced stoves on this list are dark stainless steel with black glass doors and black glass ceramic cooktops. The three lower priced stoves are white with black glass doors and individual black enamel or ceramic burners.
Warranty: All of the stoves on this list come with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, but a couple of them have the option to extend it. The Beko stove, like many Beko products, comes with the option to register for an additional 3-year warranty at no extra cost, taking it to five years warranty in total. The Altus model allows you to register for an additional year, taking it to three years in total. For ovens with 2-year warranties, Appliances Online offers additional paid extended warranty Customer Care Plans.
This stove features the biggest capacity of any on this list at 82L, and combines all heating elements and a fan for consistent heat distribution. It offers eight oven functions, including a full grill, and incorporates catalytic panels for easier cleaning.
Its vitroceramic cooktop features four cooking zones of various sizes for cooking versatility. It comes with the option to register for an additional 3-year warranty at no extra cost, in addition to its standard 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.
