Keep your wardrobe fresh and dapper with smart ideas for better washing and drying.

For decades, vented dryers were the go-to choice for Australian households, and they're still a solid option for a lot of people today. They work by heating damp laundry, which produces warm, moist air that then gets vented, ideally through properly installed ducting, to the outside. If you lack this ducting, the hot, damp air is released into the laundry room, which is OK if you have adequate ventilation, but can lead to damp walls and mouldy ceilings if you don’t.
These days, heat pump dryers are taking the lead thanks to their energy efficiency and the fact that they don’t need ventilation. They're significantly cheaper to run, which makes them particularly appealing if you use your dryer a lot, but they tend to have a higher upfront price tag and are too heavy to wall mount.
If you rent your home, have limited floor space or already have venting set up, a vented dryer can still be the more practical choice. Plus, they're lightweight enough to be stackable on top of washing machines, and can also usually be wall mounted - both great options for maximising space in smaller laundry rooms.
Here's a look at seven of our most popular vented clothes dryers, covering a range of capacities, brands, and budgets to help you find the right fit for your home.

Energy efficiency: Most models on this list have a 2-star Energy Star rating, while the Onix (#3) leads with 2.5 stars (by means of comparison, heat pump dryers have between 7 and 10 stars). The average annual energy cost ranges from $71.63 for the Onix to $91.35 for both Fisher & Paykel models (#1 and #7). These estimates are based on the government’s Standard Test of once-weekly use, so if you machine dry more frequently, you can expect higher running costs.
Brand: Fisher & Paykel leads the pack with two models on this list. The other brands - Westinghouse, Onix, Electrolux, Seiki, and Haier - each have one model featured.
Capacity: The 7kg and 6kg vented dryers are the joint most common size here, with three of each capacity on the list. One model splits the difference with 6.5kg. Vented dryers tend to be no bigger than 7kg, whereas heat pump dryers can be up to 10kg.
Dimensions: Width is fairly consistent across all models at around 595-600mm. Depth varies from 525mm (Onix #3) to 600mm (Westinghouse #2), while height ranges from the particularly short 700mm (Onix #3) to 840mm (Seiki #5). If you're trying to fit a dryer beneath a laundry benchtop or into a tight space, double-check these measurements before buying.
Colour and design features: All seven models come in white, which is standard for vented dryers. Design features vary slightly, some have dial controls (Westinghouse, Haier, Electrolux), while others feature electronic or touch controls (Fisher & Paykel, Seiki, Onix). Most include LED displays for easy monitoring. All models have a lint filter that collects tiny fabric and grit particles each time you dry a load: it is recommended you remove and empty the filter between every use of the dryer.
Warranty: Most models offer a 2-year manufacturer warranty, with the Onix standing out with a 3-year warranty and the Seiki coming in at just 1 year. A longer warranty can offer peace of mind.
Other key features: Wall mounting is available across all models, making them ideal for saving floor space. When wall mounted, dryers are typically installed upside down so the control panel sits at a comfortable height rather than above your head. For this reason, most models feature invertible control panels, allowing you to flip the display so all settings remain legible and easy to read.
Reverse tumbling is standard on most models to prevent tangling and ensure even drying. Several models feature sensor drying technology to detect moisture levels and prevent over-drying. The Haier offers the most drying programs with 15 specialised cycles, while the Onix keeps it simple with just three.
Price: Two models fall into the budget-friendly $ category (under $400 RRP), four into the mid-range $$ (between $400-$800), and one into the higher $$$ price bracket (over $800). The price brackets are in relation only to the other dryers on this list. Higher priced vented dryers are available, but more affordable options tend to be best sellers.
