Keep your wardrobe fresh and dapper with smart ideas for better washing and drying.

Updated May 2026
If you’re looking for a clothes dryer that won't send your power bill through the roof, you’ll want a heat pump dryer. These clever machines use heat pump technology to recycle hot air throughout the drying process rather than constantly heat new air and vent it out. This makes them significantly more energy-efficient than traditional types of dryers, like vented and condenser models.
The benefits stack up: because heat pump dryers don't expel steamy air into the room like vented models do, they won’t turn your laundry into a wet room and you don’t need to have external ventilation or ducting installed. They're significantly cheaper to run thanks to greater energy efficiency (between 7 and 10 Energy Stars, versus 2 for vented and condenser dryers), and while they cost more upfront than vented dryers, you'll likely recoup that difference through lower running costs over time. The other good news is, while it was once a premium-priced option, heat pump technology has become widely affordable, with several very budget-friendly models making the list of top sellers below.
There are a couple of trade-offs to consider, but for most people, they aren’t deal breakers: drying cycles take longer than vented dryers because they operate at lower temperatures, but this gentler approach is better for fabric, reducing wear and shrinkage. Most models include a fast dry cycle, so you still have that option when you need something dried in a hurry. While heat pump dryers can’t be wall mounted like most vented models, they can be stacked on top of compatible front load washing machines with proper stacking kits.
Let's dive into 10 of our most popular heat pump dryers currently streamlining laundry day in homes across Australia.

Size/capacity: The most common capacity across this lineup is 8kg, featured in eight of the ten models. Two 9kg options from Bosch (#1 and #4) cater to bigger households or those who regularly wash and dry bulky items like bedding.
Energy Star rating: Efficiency remains a primary selling point across the range. The lineup features five models with a 7-star rating, three models with an 8-star rating, one model with a 9-star rating (the new Bosch Series 8 8kg), and the standalone 10-star Bosch Series 8 (#9) leading the efficiency pack.
Energy cost: Running costs range from just $28.42 (Bosch 10-star model #9) to $49.30 annually for the industry ‘standard’ number of uses. Even at the higher end, these figures represent significant savings compared to traditional dryers, which typically cost $100+ per year to run for the same number of cycles.
Brand: Bosch dominates this list with an impressive four models spanning their Series 6 and Series 8 ranges. Haier, Hisense, Seiki, Westinghouse, Beko, and the newly added Mykin each feature once.
Colour/finish: Every model on this list has a classic white finish (laundry appliances, in particular, are often known as white goods for a reason). While several of the brands make heat pump dryers in black finishes, they tend to be more of a niche choice. Design details vary, with some featuring dark control panels, tinted transparent doors, or silver elements.
Dimensions: Heights are very similar across all models (842-850mm), as are widths (595-600mm). Depth varies more significantly, from 580mm (Hisense #3) to 692mm (Haier #2), and this is often in relation to capacity: larger drums go deeper rather than wider. If you're installing your dryer beneath a benchtop, shallower depths fit more flush, while deeper models protrude further into the room (especially as you should ideally leave an additional 100-150mm for power cable and drainage hose).
Warranty: Most models on this list come with a standard 2-year manufacturer's warranty, with the exception of the Hisense (#3) with 3 years and the Seiki (#6), which has a 1-year warranty. Beko (#10) still leads the pack for peace of mind, offering a total of 5 years manufacturer’s warranty, as it does with all of its appliances, if you register your dryer within 90 days of purchase (two years as standard, additional three years upon registration).
Other key features: Auto-sensing and intelligent humidity sensors appear across the models to prevent fabric damage from over-drying. Reverse tumble action is standard across nearly the entire range to minimise tangling. Newer inclusions to the list also spotlight versatile physical accessories, such as flat-lay stationary drying racks for shoes and delicate toys.
Price: Five models fall into the budget-friendly $ category (under $1,100), three sit in the mid-range $$ bracket ($1,100-$2,100), while two machines are in the higher $$$ category (over $2,100).
The price brackets are in relation only to the other dryers on this list. Significantly higher priced heat pump dryers are available, but with budget a key consideration for most people, affordable options tend to be best sellers.
NOTE: The prices shown are according to Recommended Retail Price (RRP), but Appliances Online sells heat pump dryers at below RRP when possible, so just click the link for each model to see the current price.
Although higher price, higher efficiency models feature strongly on the list, the Australian market for heat pump dryers is now well within reach for consumers on a budget who don’t want to spend much more than they otherwise would be on a vented dryer. The entry of the new brand Mykin is a good example of this budget-friendly access point to an energy efficient technology that was, until fairly recently, restricted to the upper end of the market.
In terms of dryer size (external footprint rather than internal capacity), it’s interesting to note that some brands are actively working to reduce dimensions in some models. This is well illustrated by the Haier unit’s (#2) shallow depth of 586mm, which allows it to be installed beneath a standard-depth 600mm benchtop without protruding.

The Bosch Series 8 9kg model combines generous capacity with ActiveAir technology that efficiently recycles heat throughout the drying process. AutoDry sensors prevent over-drying by monitoring temperature and moisture levels, while the AntiVibration design minimises noise and the Sensitive Drying System introduces warm air from all sides for gentle, wrinkle-free clothes.
An Easy Iron function rotates the drum after cycles to prevent creasing, and the LED drum light improves visibility. With 14 specialised programs including down drying and a Quick 40 cycle, this dryer handles everything from delicate fabrics to bulky quilts.
