5 of our top best selling gas heaters in Australia 2026

Keep toasty warm this Aussie winter

When it comes to warming your home, you might have the choice between electric and gas heating. Gas heaters produce fast, steady warmth and are suited to open plan homes and living rooms. They can often heat up large rooms more quickly than electric heaters and, depending on your region and energy provider, could have lower running costs. Many models are available in either natural gas or LPG versions, so it’s easy to find one that matches your home’s gas connection.

Of course, you can only use gas heaters in rooms with gas connections, so they lack the flexibility of portable electric heaters. Due to safety considerations, unflued gas heaters can also only be used in rooms with proper ventilation and cannot be legally installed in bedrooms. Regulations on gas appliances vary by state, so check local laws before buying. If gas isn’t an option for you, check out our top selling oil column heaters and our most popular panel heaters.

If you’ve decided that gas is the best option for your home heating but don’t have time to research dozens of models, this quick rundown of our most popular gas heaters could save you a lot of effort.

5 trending gas heaters at a glance

Fuel source: All the gas heaters on this list are designed for natural gas connections. However, four of the models are also available in LPG versions.

Heating coverage: Matching a heater to your room size is one of the most important considerations when buying any new heating system. Heating capacity varies significantly across this list: Models like the Rinnai Avenger (#1) are designed for heating large spaces, while lower capacity models such as the Rinnai Enduro (#4) are better suited to smaller rooms or compact apartments.

Heating coverage figures should be interpreted carefully, as brands may measure room size differently. The product pages for the Rinnai models display separate capacities for very cold through to mild climates, which can give a more realistic guide if you live in colder parts of Australia like Canberra or Tasmania. For example, the Rinnai Avenger (#1) heats up to 97m² in mild climates but 53m² in very cold climates. Omega Altise lists broader maximum coverage figures, likely based on milder room conditions. For this reason, we have used the ‘milder conditions’ figures to allow for more realistic comparison between models.

It is also useful to consider the MJ (megajoule) rating, which measures gas heat output. In general, higher MJ output means a greater ability to produce heat and warm larger areas, but it should always be considered alongside room insulation, layout and climate rather than used on its own.

Brands: Rinnai is the most represented brand here, with three models on the list, while Omega Altise appears twice.

Energy efficiency: All five heaters have strong Energy Star Ratings, ranging from 5.8 to 5.9 stars. It is important to remember that gas heater star ratings compare heaters with similar heat output and heating capacity. A larger heater may use more gas overall, but still be considered relatively energy efficient compared to other similar-size models that use more gas to achieve the same level of heat output.

Several models include economy or thermostat modes designed to maintain a stable temperature while helping manage running costs.

Design features: Convection heating is common across this list, with built-in fans helping distribute warm air more evenly throughout the room. The Omega Altise models combine radiant and convection heating, which can give you the best of both worlds by providing both direct warmth and broader room heating.

Remote control operation is included on several models, while programmable timers and thermostat settings are especially common on the Rinnai range. These features can make it easier to heat up living areas before you wake up or return home.

Warranty: The Rinnai heaters on this list include a 5-year domestic warranty covering parts and labour, while both Omega Altise models include a 3-year domestic warranty. Warranty length is only one part of the picture, but it can provide extra peace of mind.

Other key features: Safety features are a major focus across all five heaters. Features such as flame failure shut off, child lock systems, oxygen depletion sensors and tip-over switches are common. These are particularly important for portable and unflued gas heaters.

Several heaters also have low emissions technology, electronic thermostat control and programmable timers for greater convenience and energy efficiency.

Price: The price brackets are in relation only to the other heaters on this list. Higher priced gas heaters are available, but these options are some of the best sellers.

Pricing is partly linked to heating capacity, as well as whether a model is LPG or natural gas and the types of features included. Larger heaters designed for open plan areas generally cost more than compact models intended for smaller spaces, so prices should be compared against similarly sized heaters with the same fuel type.

One model falls into the lowest purchase price $ category (under $1,100), three sit in the mid-range $$ bracket ($1,100-$2,000), and one machine is in the higher $$$ category (over $2,000).

What customers say:

Bought to replace our old (25 years) Everdure Brigadier. It is essentially the same heater with some updated modifications. Heats our large family/kitchen area (3m high ceilings) in just minutes. Looks great too. The only downside is the noise of the fan on the high setting. Notwithstanding the fan noise, I recommend it as an efficient and very effective space heater.” - Thomasfather, June 2023

What customers say:

I’m very happy with our new heater, I was a bit dubious on how much warmth we would get from it as we are used to an open gas heater but it is amazing, one push to ignite and it pushes out a great deal of warm air. We have quite an open area and it heats it really well. As I bought it on special I was pleased with the cost, delivery was next day and packaging was taken away.” - Kazza 23, August 2025

The Omega Altise Lancer Natural Gas Radiant Convector Heater OALAFNGSD
#5. Omega Altise Lancer Natural Gas Radiant Convector Heater

What customers say:

Client service person matched a price found cheaper elsewhere and I received it the next day! The delivery man also checked it was the right colour as the box showed differently. Fantastic service all round and the heater is easy to use, keeping me warm. Was worried initially not be big enough as there are no longer 18mj unflued portable heaters around that I could find (SA govt rules also means unable to install any bigger than 18mj unflued) but it works well heating up my 44m2 open plan area. Very happy with it.” - Juls, July 2025
