A Premium Fridge Designed Around Freshness
We recently upgraded our fridge and spent quite a bit of time looking at different layouts and features. What really attracted us to this Hitachi was that, rather than focusing on gadgets and unnecessary smart features, the design is centred around practical storage, food freshness and making everyday use easier.
It is a large fridge, but what impressed me most is how effectively the space is divided into separate drawers and compartments.
The multiple fresh-food drawers are extremely practical. I particularly like the dedicated vegetable compartment, which has three levels of storage. It gives us much better organisation than having all our vegetables mixed together in one large drawer. I also like having a smaller upper vegetable area where we can keep leftover vegetables or prepared ingredients that we want to access quickly.
Another excellent feature is the Vacuum Fresh compartment. We use this for seafood, beef and chicken. Being able to select the temperature, including around -1°C or 1°C, is very useful for keeping fresh food at the appropriate temperature. Because it is a separate, enclosed compartment, the food is less affected when the main fridge doors are opened, and it also helps contain food odours. For us, this is one of the most useful features of the fridge.
The door storage is also very generous. We can easily fit larger milk bottles, eggs and drink bottles without overcrowding the shelves. Inside the fridge, the adjustable shelves make it easy to accommodate taller bottles, containers and even larger pots.
Ice without plumbing
I particularly like the non-plumbed automatic ice system. There is a dedicated water compartment with a built-in filter, so we simply fill it with tap water rather than needing a permanent water connection. The capacity is good enough that we don't need to refill it constantly.
The separate ice compartment is another clever idea. We can access ice without opening the entire freezer, which is much more convenient and avoids unnecessarily opening a large freezer compartment. There is also plenty of room for ice when entertaining, and the option to turn ice making off once we have enough is very useful. The fast-ice function is handy when we need more ice unexpectedly.
The water level sensor is another small but thoughtful touch. It lets us know when the water needs to be refilled, so we don't suddenly discover that there is no ice available.
Freezer layout
The freezer arrangement is very practical as well. There is a separate smaller freezer area around the ice compartment, which is useful for smaller frozen items such as ice popsicles.
The dedicated fresh-food freezing compartment is particularly useful for meat and seafood. The design helps minimise ice build-up around these items, which is something I really appreciate for maintaining the quality of frozen food.
The large bottom freezer is also very well organised, with separate compartments rather than one large open space. The aluminium tray in the upper section is a great feature for rapidly freezing meat and seafood while helping preserve their quality.
Having the freezer divided into different sections makes it much easier to organise everything without having to dig through a crowded freezer.
Thoughtful everyday features
The automatic-opening doors are another feature I didn't initially realise how useful they would be. A simple touch makes opening the fridge much easier, especially when your hands are full. It also provides a controlled way of opening the doors rather than pulling them from awkward angles.
The bottom automatic-opening vegetable drawer is equally convenient. It has a well-designed internal layout, including space for taller bottles as well as a dedicated vegetable area.
I also like the Spot Cool function. Being able to quickly cool items that have just been placed inside the fridge is useful because it helps bring the food down to temperature quickly without unnecessarily affecting the rest of the fridge.
Despite its large footprint, the multiple-drawer design means we don't have to open the entire fridge every time we need something. Only accessing the compartment we need should also help minimise unnecessary loss of cold air.
Built around freshness rather than gimmicks
For me, this is what makes this fridge stand out. It doesn't try to impress with technology that isn't particularly useful in everyday life. Instead, the technology is built around a simple idea: keep fresh food fresh for longer and preserve the quality of frozen food.
The combination of dedicated vegetable storage, Vacuum Fresh storage, specialised freezing, separate ice access and multiple drawers gives us much better control over how different foods are stored.
That should also help reduce food waste, particularly with vegetables, herbs, seafood and other fresh ingredients that can otherwise deteriorate quickly.
The fridge is very quiet and feels extremely well built. Being Made in Japan also gave us confidence in the overall build quality and attention to detail.
We chose the Crystal Black finish because we felt the darker mirror-style finish would be too visually distracting in our kitchen. That said, I would have preferred a Crystal White option for this particular model, as that would have been our first choice.
Overall, this is a premium, thoughtfully designed refrigerator. The large capacity is great, but for me, the real advantage is the way the space is organised and the technology is used to preserve food freshness.
The multiple drawers, dedicated fresh-food areas, Vacuum Fresh compartment, specialised freezer sections, automatic opening and convenient ice system all make a real difference to everyday use.
If your priority is keeping fresh food fresher for longer, organising your fridge properly and reducing unnecessary food waste, rather than having technology just for the sake of it, this is an excellent design.
