What is a Condenser Dryer?
A condenser dryer is a type of tumble dryer that extracts moisture from your clothes and collects it in an internal reservoir or drains it through a hose. Unlike a standard vented dryer, which exhausts hot, moist air into the room or through external vents, a condenser dryer manages moisture internally. This means only warm dry air is expelled from the machine.
How does a Condenser Dryer Work?
A condenser dryer works by continuously drawing in cool air and heating it. This hot air is then blown through your clothing, drawing moisture from the clothes. The moist air is then passed through a condenser to convert the moisture into water, which collects in a water reservoir or drained through a drain hose. This process is repeated until your clothes are dry.
Are Condenser Dryers Suitable for Small Spaces?
Absolutely! Condenser dryers are especially perfect for apartments and small laundries. Without the need for external venting, you have more flexibility in where you can place your dryer, without having to worry about having hot sticky air going out into the room. Instead it's just warm dry air, making it even more appealing during the winter months.
What Features Should I Look for in a Condenser Dryer?
Look for features such as sensor drying, which automatically stops the cycle once your clothes are dry. Some models also come with a drying rack for your delicate items. This feature allows you to place items in the machine without them being tossed around during the drying cycle.
Condenser dryer vs Heat pump dryer - What's the difference?
Both heat pump and condenser dryers collect the moisture from the hot air generated during the drying cycles, and is either stored within a reservoir for emptying or expelled through a drain hose.
However, heat pump dryers are more energy-efficient as they typically run at a max temperature of about 50 degrees celsius and reuse the same air generated during the drying process.
Condenser dryers, on the other hand, run at a much higher temperature of roughly 75 degrees celsius, and requires a constant supply of cool air to draw in and continuously heat and function, consuming more energy. Because of the higher temps, they should be kept in a well ventilated area for the warm air to properly escape.
Condenser dryer vs Vented dryer - What's the difference?
Both machines rely on a constant flow of air to be drawn in and continue functioning. The main difference between a vented and a condenser dryer is what they do with the moisture that is drawn from the clothes.
A condenser dryer will draw the moisture from the clothes using hot air. The hot air is then condensed into water and the water is collected in a reservoir or is drained out of the machine. The resulting air that is expelled is warm dry air.
A vented dryer on the other hand will draw the moisture from the clothes using hot air and continually exhaust that same air out, this time with higher moisture levels. This makes venting the unit more important, to ensure there is no build up of hot moist air in the surrounding room - otherwise you have to make sure you have a well ventilated area when running a vented dryer, to avoid moisture buildup and mould.
How Do I Install a Condenser Dryer?
Condenser dryers can be installed as freestanding units or stacked with another laundry appliance using a compatible stacking kit. When it comes to stacking your machine with a stacking kit, we strongly recommend having a professional complete this for you - these units can be quite heavy and very awkward to handle. Be safe, hire a pro.
Unfortunately, condenser dryers cannot be wall-mounted because they are alot heavier compared to their vented counterparts. You also can't flip the machine upside down to have the control panel easily accessible, so it would be difficult to operate the machine, even if it was wall mounted (which it should never be).
What is the downside of a condenser tumble dryer?
The only real downside to a condenser dryer is they are not very energy efficient. Whilst they offer faster drying times, this normally translates into higher running costs which means more to pay on your energy bills. However, they are typically less expensive upfront. There is also the weight component, which means no wall-mounting option is available.
If it's wall mounting or better energy efficiency you are after, be sure to check out our vented and heat pump dryers for more options that better suit your needs.
