What is the best brand of BBQ?

The best brand of BBQ will depend on your barbequing needs. Appliances Online range a variety of brands suited to every barbequing style.

The Weber Baby Q is portable and compact, making it ideal for camping or living in an apartment or other smaller living spaces. It's perfect for any beach day or for cooking on a small balcony.

You can also create a dedicated BBQ space at home. We offer a variety of freestanding or built-in options from Beefeater, Napoleon or Artusi. Alongside cast iron hot plates and a double layered roasting hood, The Beefeater 1200 Series 5 Burner Built-in BBQ, features a viewing window to monitor your cooking. This prevents heat from unnecessarily escaping, as there is no need to raise the lid.

If you want to capture that authentic smokehouse flavour, Traegar and Oklahoma Joe have a range of smokers and charcoal grill bbqs to smoke the perfect brisket. Traegar exclusively uses natural hardwood pellets as fuel for their smokers. Oklahoma Joe's Rambler gives you an authentic texas charcoal smoker, that is portable and can be stowed on your countertop.

To maximise usage, certain models can accommodate various BBQ accessories. Carts and trolleys make mobility even easier for portable units such as the Weber Family Q. Pizza stones can be used on either a gas or charcoal fuel source, allowing your BBQ to function as a pizza oven. Rotisserie kits allow you to slow-roast meat on a spit, by rotating continually over indirect heat. The Hub Charcoal BBQ from Everdure by Heston Blumenthal takes this a step further with its rotoscope technology. Create flare with each cookup as you sear vegetables and steaks on the grill plate below your slow cooking rotisserie.

What is the best barbeque?

The best BBQ will depend on the requirements of your outdoor cooking needs:
  • Portable: Portable gas BBQs are mobile, compact, and usually feature 1 to 3 burners. This makes them perfect for travelling or creating the staple, Aussie backyard on an apartment balcony. Whether you prefer to cook with gas, charcoal or electricity, there's a perfect portable BBQ for you.
  • Electric: Energy efficient and simple to use, electric bbqs closely resemble the grilling barbeque experience without the need for LPG and natural gas. This is ideal for locations that restrict gas fuel sources.
  • Freestanding: Attached to a wheeled cart, freestanding BBQs offer the catering capacity of a built-in, with the mobility of a portable BBQ.
  • Built-in: Perfect for your outdoor kitchen, built-in barbeques are essential for the staple Australian backyard. Permanent installation allows for a more streamlined alfresco experience.
  • Flat top: Perfect for cooking large quantities of food with ease. The size of the hotplate is convenient for either catering or cooking for the whole family.
  • Smoker: Ideal for briskets, chicken and other slow cooked meats, smoker grills use low temperature smoke created from charcoal or wood pellets to slowly cook meat to the desired temperature.

What is the difference between BBQ and grilling?

Essentially, barbequing involves cooking with the lid closed, whilst grilling involves cooking with the lid raised. With the lid closed, you are cooking using indirect heat, similar to using an oven. This ensures that heat is distributed more evenly. Grilling involves applying direct heat to the bottom of what you are cooking. This will require regular rotation to ensure all sides are cooked evenly.

What size BBQ is best?

The best size for barbequing will depend on factors including lifestyle, intended usage, and available space. For gas barbeques, size is determined mainly by the number of burners the unit has:
  • 2- & 3-Burner: The smallest of the built-ins and freestanding units, good for a family of 2 to -4 people. Three independent burners, a plate, and a grill make up this module.
  • 4-Burner: The most popular size BBQ in Australia. It features four independent burners, with two under the plate and two under the grill. This BBQ gives the user the most freedom and control over heat management and cooking styles. Designed to comfortably feed a family of 4 to -6 people.
  • 6-Burner: The largest of all the built-ins and freestanding burner BBQs available, These are designed to feed a family of 6 people or more. Generally comes with two grills and one cast iron plate configuration with each one sitting atop two burners for heat transfer.

It’s also important to consider that certain barbeques may require installation and clearance from local councils.

How to clean a BBQ?

Cleaning your BBQ is a lot easier than it looks. Most BBQs are designed for easy maintenance if cleaned regularly or with each use:
  • While the BBQ is still hot, use your wire brush and scraper to remove baked-on food scraps and fat collected on the grill plates. If the plates are extra dirty, they can be removed and soaked in soapy water.
  • Fill the removable drip pan underneath the BBQ with either sand or fat soak so that fat and oil are absorbed. After the barbeque has cooled down, the drippings will have turned black and thick for easy removal.
  • The exterior can be wiped down using paper towels and hot soapy water. This should be done not long after cooking so that the heat from the BBQ can easily shift oil, grease and stains.
  • Whilst the BBQ is still hot, the interior of the hood can be wiped down using a paper towel. Oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves should be worn.

Tips: Coat your BBQ with cooking spray or vegetable oil before using your grill

To clean your smoker use a high temperature, food grade oil to wipe down the inside of the cooking chamber. This ensures the smoker is optimally maintained and safe to cook each time. For more information on cleaning your barbeque, read through our BBQ Cleaning Guide.
