All things cooking, cleaning, chilling and more for the hard-working heart of your home.

Every time you cook, pots and pans release steam, grease particles, smoke, and odours into the air. Without a good rangehood, that stuff ends up in your lungs, coating your cabinetry, settling on your benchtops, and generally making your kitchen a little greasier. A good rangehood clears the air quickly, helping to protect surfaces and make cooking a far more pleasant experience - especially in open-plan homes where cooking smells can travel everywhere.
Unless you're doing a full kitchen remodel, it's usually easiest to replace your existing rangehood with one of the same type, size and ventilation system.
In terms of size, your rangehood should be a similar width to your cooktop, so it captures as much vapour as possible.
The most common types of rangehoods are slideout (hidden inside overhead cabinetry, sliding out when needed), fixed undermount (inside cabinetry but permanently in position), and fixed wall-mounted models (visible, attached to the wall either beneath a cabinet or as a canopy style with a chimney section reaching the ceiling). Less common types include island rangehoods, which are ceiling-mounted canopies for cooktops on kitchen islands, and downdraft rangehoods - a premium, minimalist option that pulls air downward rather than up.
Most rangehoods are ducted by default, meaning they extract air and expel it outside via ductwork through your walls or ceiling - the most effective ventilation method. The alternative is recirculating, where air is filtered through charcoal filters and returned to the kitchen, which is handy when external ducting isn't possible (think apartments). Many rangehoods can be adapted between the two with additional kits or installation work, if needed.
If you’re overwhelmed by the hundreds of rangehoods out there, this list of our top-sellers is a handy snapshot of what thousands of other Aussies are choosing for their kitchens. They’ve done their research, so you don’t have to.

Type: Slideout rangehoods dominate, with this style of undermount making up half of the models on the list. Two fixed undermount models also feature, along with two canopy rangehoods and one fixed visible rangehood.
Ducted or recirculating: The good news is that almost every rangehood on this list offers flexibility on this front. The majority are ducted by default but can be converted to recirculating with an optional kit if your kitchen setup doesn't allow for external ducting. The one exception worth noting is the Smeg (#6), which is front-recirculating by default, though it can also be ducted externally with an optional kit. It's always worth double-checking the installation requirements before you buy, particularly for apartments or homes where external ducting may not be possible.
Brand: Westinghouse leads the pack with three models on this list - a 60cm slideout, an 86cm integrated undermount with Hob2Hood technology, and a 60cm fixed rangehood. Bosch has two models: a 60cm slideout and a 90cm canopy. Beko, Schweigen, Smeg, Glem and Robinhood have one model each on the list.
Noise level: Using the highest operating noise level as our benchmark across all models, the quietest rangehood on the list is the Smeg (#6) at just 52 dB. The Schweigen (#5) reaches 67.2 dB at top speed, and the Beko (#4) and Bosch (#9) both hit 69 dB. It's worth noting that noise level is partly down to size and extraction power - a larger 90cm rangehood working at full capacity will generally be louder than a 60cm model of otherwise similar performance and quality.
Colour, finish and design features: Stainless steel dominates this list as it's the default finish for most rangehoods and suits most kitchens. Bucking this trend are the Westinghouse (#3) in dark stainless steel and the Schweigen (#5) in matte black, both of which are good fits for contemporary and minimalist kitchens.
In terms of design features, the Westinghouse (#3) is the only model on the list with integrated Hob2Hood technology which allows it to communicate directly with a compatible induction cooktop and automatically adjust the fan speed based on what you're cooking.
Lighting: LED lighting is now the standard across most rangehoods, and eight out of ten models on this list feature it. The two exceptions are the Westinghouse (#8) and the Robinhood (#10), both of which use halogen lighting - older technology that still works well but uses more energy and runs hotter than LED. If energy efficiency is important to you, LED is the better long-term choice.
Filters: Almost every model on this list uses aluminium mesh filters that are dishwasher safe for easier maintenance. The number of filters varies: most 60cm models include two filters, while the larger 90cm models include three. The Robinhoood (#10) is the outlier with just one filter. The Schweigen also comes with a lifetime warranty on filters - an unusual inclusion that adds value and peace of mind.
Warranty: Most rangehoods on this list come with a standard 2-year manufacturer's warranty. Two models offer more: the Beko (#4) extends to 5 years total when you register your product (2 years standard, plus 3 extra years on registration), and the Schweigen (#5) comes with a 3-year warranty plus the lifetime filter warranty.
Price: The price brackets used in this list are in relation only to the other rangehoods on this list. Higher-priced rangehoods are available, but mid-price and budget-friendly options tend to be best sellers.
NOTE: The prices shown are according to Recommended Retail Price (RRP), but Appliances Online sells rangehoods at below RRP when possible, so just click the link for each model to see Appliances Online's price.
In the budget-friendly $ bracket (under $400 RRP) you'll find four models: the Robinhood (#10), the Westinghouse (#8), the Beko (#4), and the Westinghouse (#1). These are all 60cm slideout or fixed models - practical and no-frills.
The mid-range $$ bracket (between $400-900) covers three models: the Bosch (#2), the Smeg (#6), and the Westinghouse (#3). These offer more features or more premium styling.
The higher-end $$$ bracket (over $900) contains the three 90cm models: the Bosch (#9), the Schweigen (#5), and the Glem (#7). As you'd expect, price does have some relationship to size - wider rangehoods cost more to manufacture, and the larger 90cm models on this list all sit in the top price tier.
