From movies and music to streaming and gaming, let's talk TV, tech and home entertainment!
Black Friday is the perfect time to snag a great deal on a new TV, but with so many models, technologies, and brands to choose from in Australia, where do you even start?
Easy - screen size.
Think about how far away from your new TV you will be sitting. Whether you plan to wall mount it or have it freestanding on an entertainment unit, the distance between your couch and TV should be roughly 2.5 times the screen size (measured diagonally). A 65-inch TV, for example, works well in rooms where you sit three to four metres away. Remember, bigger isn't always better – it needs to fit your space comfortably or it’ll be like sitting in the front row at the movies.
These days a lot of people are opting for 65 and 75 inch TVs, so you’ll see plenty of these in the Black Friday Sales. Would a 65 or 75 inch TV suit your home better?
Once you’ve settled on your screen size, you can think about these other features.
Almost all modern TVs are 4K Ultra HD (UHD), which has four times the resolution (number of pixels) of Full HD. With sharp images and vibrant colours, 4K is great for streaming movies, gaming, or watching live sport. You may find one or two Full HD TVs in the sale, but they are increasingly rare as 4K has become the standard.
You will, however, see a few 8K TVs in the sales too, but unless you have specific needs for super high resolution, you probably won’t want to splash out the much higher price for a negligible difference. There’s very limited content made or streamed in 8K (which has four times the number of pixels of 4K), and there’s dispute over whether the human eye can even differentiate between the clarity of 4K and 8K at usual viewing distances.
So, almost all televisions you find in the Black Friday 2024 Sale will be 4K smart TVs.
The multiple acronyms you see when you’re looking at new TVs refer to specific differences in the way the picture displays.
QLED TVs
QLED, a technology pioneered by Samsung, uses Quantum Dots to enhance brightness and colour accuracy. QLED TVs are particularly good in brightly lit rooms and have high contrast, which gives the picture more depth and detail.
OLED TVs
If you’re after deeper blacks and superior contrast, OLED TVs are the way to go. Each pixel emits its own light, resulting in stunning picture quality. Brands like LG and Sony Bravia are leaders in this space, with options like the OLED B4 and Bravia XR. OLED TVs do tend to be among the most expensive options out there—but it’s Black Friday, so you might find one that’s dipped down into your budget.
Neo QLED, Mini LED, and beyond
If you’re looking for super advanced image display, you can consider Neo QLED (Mini LED) or other advanced options like QD-OLED and ULED from Hisense. These technologies combine improved contrast with incredible brightness and can come at a lower price than OLED.
The takeaway? Regardless of the display technology it uses, almost any 4K UHD TV today will deliver a much brighter, clearer and more impressive picture than your old telly.
For most people, the following points are less important distinctions but still worth taking note of.
HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision
Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are playback technologies that optimise colour, contrast and brightness. TVs will feature one or both of these. Although they are extremely similar, slight differences might make Dolby Vision your preference if you’re a movie buff and HDR10+ your choice if you’re a gamer.
Smart TV capabilities
Most TVs today come with built-in apps like Netflix, Stan, Disney+, and Apple TV+, though you will need to pay for a subscription to access these streaming services. The TV you choose will run on an operating system, much like your phone or any other smart device does. These will be either Google TV/Android TV (common in Sony and TCL models), Tizen (Samsung's smart platform), or webOS (LG).
Features like Bluetooth connectivity make it easy to pair soundbars and other devices. Most TVs also allow you to use voice control using Google Assistant or Alexa, while Samsung models integrate with SmartThings for home automation, allowing you to monitor and control various Samsung smart devices - from your TV to your fridge and washing machine - from within one app.
HDMI and ports
Check that the TV you have you’re eye on has enough HDMI ports for all your devices—gaming consoles, laptops, and sound systems. Newer TVs also support HDMI 2.1, ideal for next-gen gaming and Dolby Atmos sound systems.
Audio
While TV audio has improved over the years, the shift towards ultra-thin screens means it hasn’t kept pace with advancements in visuals—mainly because powerful speakers require more space. For a true hi-fi experience, you will probably want to buy a soundbar to accompany your new TV. Some Black Friday deals will bundle TVs with soundbars.
As you browse Black Friday deals on big screen TVs, don’t be blinded by the allure of huge discounts alone. Keep these factors in mind:
1. Build a shortlist of TVs beforehand
Before the sales start, build an online wishlist of TVs that meet your criteria. For example, if you’re not too worried about brand or whether it’s OLED or QLED, but you want it to be 65 inches and have HDR10+ because you’re an avid gamer, select these search filters and add a few matching results to your cart. Then, when the sale starts you can quickly make your choice based on the best discounted sale price.
2. Look for real discounts
Look for genuine discounts by comparing sale prices with the RRP (Appliances Online displays both, as well as the percentage off). The best deals go fast, so be prepared to act quickly. This is why it’s really useful to do what you’re doing right now and brush up on what you want in your new TV beforehand!
3. Check stock levels
Many online and in-store deals are limited to stock on hand. A TV might not be restocked once it sells out, and even if it is, it’s unlikely to be at its Black Friday price. If a TV on your wishlist has an unmissable Black Friday discount and is marked as ‘limited stock’, add it to your cart to avoid the dreaded FOMO.
4. Consider star ratings and reviews
Always check customer reviews and star ratings before buying. A 4K OLED TV with a 50% discount might seem unmissable, but if multiple customer reviews mention poor performance or reliability, it’s better to steer clear.
5. Compare across retailers
Prices can vary significantly between retailers during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Use comparison tools to find the best buy and see if stores offer any other incentives to buy with them. Appliances Online price matches during the Black Friday Sale and provides free delivery for TVs (which is pretty rare), often by the next day depending on your location and stock availability.
