For 2-4 people, a portable BBQ with two burners is often sufficient. For entertaining larger groups of 5-10, you will probably want to upsize to a freestanding 3-4 burner BBQ, otherwise, you’ll be cooking in batches, leading to cold food and disjointed meals.
When it comes to BBQs, there are all manner of bells and whistles available, from rotisserie kits and wok side burners to hibachis and BBQ smokers. Some of these are great, but by far the most important thing to look for is sturdy construction. BBQs get worked hard and cranked up to high temperatures, so prioritise quality construction that can take the heat!
A built-in temperature gauge is also very helpful when using the BBQ for convection cooking, like roasting a cut of lamb or butterflied chicken. Rust-resistant cast iron or porcelain-enamelled cast iron grill grates can really enhance heat distribution and retention, while built-in ignition, multi-position shelves, and lockable casters add convenience.
The most affordable options are charcoal or pellet-fired BBQs and portable LPG (propane) gas grills. There are a small number of electric BBQs available but they are few and far between and tend to have more limited temperature ranges.
Compact portable gas BBQs or charcoal kettle grills are convenient for taking camping or to the beach, and will often have enough cooking area to prepare food for 4 to 6 people. Freestanding units usually provide more substantial BBQ grill space, suitable for entertaining larger groups.
