What's the perfect temperature for your home heating in winter?

The ideal setting to keep the chill out of the air and energy bills reasonable.

It's a question that's had Aussies scratching their heads since the invention of the thermostat. With energy costs soaring, we all want to find that perfect balance between toasty toes and running costs that doesn't reduce our wallet to ashes. It's the Goldilocks conundrum of the modern home - not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

So, what temperature should you set your heating to?

Drumroll, please... The sweet spot for most homes during the winter months is between 18-21°C.

"But wait!" I hear you cry, "That's practically Arctic!" Well, before you start knitting yourself a onesie, let's break it down and look at how this temperature setting can save energy and money.

The science behind the savings

Studies have shown that for every degree Celsius you lower your thermostat, you can save around 5-10% on your heating costs, depending on your home and heating system. That's nothing to sneeze at (though you might be doing a bit more of that if you go too low).

Here's a quick rundown of what different temperature settings mean for your body and your energy consumption:

  • 24°C+: Tropical paradise, but you might as well be burning banknotes for warmth. This high temperature setting leads to excessive energy usage.

  • 22-23°C: Cosy. A lovely temperature when the sun produces it for free during the Aussie summer, not so great for your electricity bill or emissions.

  • 20-21°C: The Goldilocks zone. A comfortable room temperature for most, and your energy bills won't cry themselves to sleep.

  • 18-19°C: A bit nippy, but throw on a jumper and you'll be right. Your bank account will thank you for this energy-saving temperature.

  • Below 18°C: Brrr! Only for the brave (or those with some quality thermal underwear). While this lower temperature will certainly reduce energy use, it might be a bit too chilly for comfort.

Does your home stay warmer than the outside air, even without heating?

If it’s 12°C outside in the morning, setting your thermostat at a modest 19°C will require it to do some significant work. It probably won’t need to raise the temperature by 7 degrees, however, because it’s unlikely that the air inside your home will be as cold as the outdoor air to start with (and it won't have the 'wind chill factor' either!).

Even if you prefer to turn the heating off at night (Nigella Lawson, for one, attributes her youthful complexion to sleeping without heating or air con on), your home will retain some of the heat from the previous day.

For example, if you set your heating to 19°C during the day and then switch it off at night, the internal temperature will start dropping, but not to the level of the outdoor temperature. If the air outside averaged 9 degrees overnight, for example, the temperature in your home would likely cool by approximately 25% to around 15 degrees by the morning (depending on your home’s insulation). When you switch the heating back on, therefore, it should just need to heat up by about four degrees.

Tips for staying comfy without breaking the bank
  • Layer up: Channel your inner onion and embrace the art of layering. A good jumper or Oodie can be worth its weight in gold (and is probably cheaper than cranking up the heating).

  • Zone heating: Only heat the living areas you're using. There's no point in keeping your laundry at tropical temperatures unless you're breeding iguanas or growing tomatoes in there. This is an efficient way to reduce heat loss and save money. Keeping bathroom and laundry doors closed can also reduce the size of the area being warmed up and therefore the amount of energy required to heat it.

  • Draught proofing: Check for any sneaky gaps letting the cold air in. It's like playing hide and seek with your heating bill. Remember, warm air rises, so sealing these gaps can significantly improve your home's energy efficiency.

  • Timing is everything: Use a programmable thermostat on your air conditioning unit or heating system to start warming things up just before you wake up or get home. Your future self will high-five you for your foresight and reduced energy costs.

  • Get moving: Nothing warms you up like a bit of exercise. Burning your body’s own energy generates some extremely personalised heat. It doesn’t get more efficient than that!

  • Consider alternatives: On milder days, ceiling fans can be an energy-efficient way to circulate warm air. For personal warmth, an electric blanket can be a cosy and cost-effective option.

Finding your perfect temperature is a bit like dating - it might take a few tries to find 'the one'. Start at 21°C and work your way down slowly. You might be surprised at how comfortable you can be while still keeping some dollars in your pocket and reducing your carbon footprint.

So go forth, Australia, and may your homes be warm(ish) and your energy bills low. Whether you're using gas heaters, column heaters or a split system reverse cycle air conditioner, these tips can help you save energy and money. And if all else fails, try the mutually beneficial heating technique of cuddling up with a furry friend or loved one.
