In 2025 Appliances Online turns 20. That's 20 years since the old appliances marketplace got a much needed shake up. Hard to recall now, but back then, if you wanted a new washing machine, fridge or dishwasher, you'd have to carve out a chunk of your weekend trekking around appliance stores, comparing and contrasting different models and prices. Appliances Online arrived to change all that, and the past two decades have been quite a ride!
So what does 20 years online look like? For us, it’s millions of appliances, countless coffees in the call centre, and one unforgettable blimp. Here are the numbers that tell our legendary story.

The very first order in 2005 was personally delivered by Appliances Online’s founder, John Winning. Jumping into his single rented truck, he made the delivery to Appliances Online's first customer.
From day one, Appliances Online set out to prove that buying a new washing machine, fridge or dishwasher on the web could be faster, easier and more enjoyable than spending your weekend traipsing around whitegoods showrooms.

John Winning was just 21 when he founded Appliances Online. Frustrated by the limitations of the in-store appliance shopping experience, and the tedium of trekking from store to store to make comparisons, he thought there was a better way.
So, he set out to try something different: selling appliances online, with great service and incredible convenience. Two decades later, and that decision has transformed how millions of Aussies shop for big and bulky goods.

In its first year of operations, the Appliances Online website proudly declared it was holding two million dollars of stock. The site was small by today’s standards, but it was already establishing strong relationships with both suppliers and customers.
Within three years, the value of stock had already tripled. Australians needed a better way to shop for white goods, and Appliances Online was happy to meet that demand.

A TV offered as a prize on our site in 2005 had a 23 inch LCD screen. At the time, screens this size were still commonplace in many Australian homes. Appliances Online didn't sell TVs yet, but when we did, we stocked a handful with even smaller screens.
Fast forward to today, and 65-75 inch models are the top picks for families across Australia - though Appliances Online does still sell some 32 inch TVs.

The home essentials of Fridges & Freezers, Washers & Dryers, and Dishwashers formed the backbone of the business in its early days.
Now, Appliances Online has over 13 categories, with hundreds of product types from mattresses to air fryers. Make no mistake, though - we do still sell a LOT of fridges, washing machines and dishwashers!

Midnight is the cutoff time for Next Day Delivery*. That means you can place an order at 11:59pm and still expect delivery the very next day, as long as it's in stock in your neck of the woods.

Our call centre was open every hour of the day and night by 2014. At the time, it was extremely unusual for an online retailer to provide round-the-clock help from real people.
Our helpful team is here in our Sydney call centre, ready to help you find the perfect dishwasher in the middle of the night, if that's when works for you. To this day, that 24/7 promise remains rare in pretty much every industry.

Around 10,000 tonnes of appliances are diverted from landfill each year through the Winning Group's free removal and recycling program, with Appliances Online accounting for the largest proportion of this activity.
Instead of being dumped and becoming waste, old fridges, washing machines and other appliances are carefully handled and responsibly recycled. It’s a winning combination of customer convenience and care for the environment.

Most of the packaging from appliances we deliver is diverted from landfill as part of the Winning Group's removal and recycling program, with Appliances Online accounting for the largest proportion of this.
When delivering appliances, we remove the plastic, cardboard and foam packaging and take it away for processing. It’s a helpful extra service for customers, though it costs them nothing extra.

By recycling packaging and old appliances and safely removing harmful ozone-depleting substances, Appliances Online avoids about 900 tonnes of CO2 emissions monthly.
This effort is part of the Winning Group's strategy to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change (Appliances Online accounts for the largest proportion of this program).
