True South: A race to remember

Legacy and spirit in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race

“Can you imagine driving a really, really fast car? You've got the steering wheel. Another guy's got the foot on the accelerator. Another guy's got his foot on the brake, and you're coming into a hairy corner in the wet. That's what it's like.”

That line, from the powerful new documentary True South, captures the reality of offshore yacht racing: speed and caution in constant tension, decisions made in seconds, and absolute trust in the people around you when the ocean stops playing nice.

For Australians, few sporting events embody that balance better than the legendary Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Each Boxing Day, millions of us watch as the fleet charges south from Sydney Harbour towards Tasmania across some of the roughest waters on the planet. For sailors around the world, finishing a Hobart is a badge of honour - their Everest.

True South brings the story of this race, and a family's journey back to it after suffering immense tragedy, to cinema screens across Australia for a limited time.

The calm of Sydney Harbour soon gives way to wild and often dangerous waters
A race that defines

For many competitive sailors, the Hobart isn’t just another regatta - it’s the ultimate test of endurance, teamwork and nerve.

Up to 100 yachts start the race in a typical year, with the fastest teams finishing within 48 hours, while others battle the elements for several days. Along the way lies the notorious Bass Strait, where fast-moving weather systems can turn the waters treacherous.

One rogue wave. One broken mast. One sudden storm. When conditions change in an instant, even the most experienced and well-prepared sailors can be caught off guard, and the event transformed from a sporting competition into a battle for survival.

John Dean, along with five other sailors, lost his life in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race
The storm that changed everything

True South marks 80 years of the Hobart race, and revisits one of its darkest chapters.

In 1998, a violent East Coast Low struck, battering the fleet with hurricane-force winds and towering waves that claimed the lives of six sailors.

Among them was John Dean - a husband, father, mentor and close friend to many in the sailing community. For the families who lived through it, the race would never be the same again.

Returning to the ocean

At the centre of the film is the bond between lifelong friends Herman Winning, founder of Appliances Online, and brothers Nathan and Peter Dean - a connection forged long before the families became forever united by the events of 1998.

Twenty-five years after the tragedy, they make the decision to return to the race. Their boat, Andoo Comanche, is one of the fastest and most powerful super-maxi yachts ever built - but this isn’t just about chasing line honours. For the Dean brothers, it’s something far more personal: as Nathan says in the documentary, “I want to know what he’s gone through. I want to do this for Dad.”

Under pressure

If you’re a fan of sports documentaries like The Test, The Last Dance or Formula 1: Drive to Survive, you’ll recognise the same powerful ingredients: intense competition, high-stakes decision-making and personalities pushed to their limits - with the added dimension of the uncontrollable force of nature.

At its heart, though, True South is about much more than sailing.

“The film is less a traditional sports documentary …and more of an autopsy of Australian masculinity, grief and the enduring bonds between a band of brothers.” - Kelly Burke, The Guardian

Directed by Dave Klaiber and produced by Will Alexander, the documentary is narrated by Sigrid Thornton with an evocative original score from Elena Kats-Chernin.

See it on the big screen

The power of the Southern Ocean, the scale of the yachts and the emotional weight of the story all come together in a way that demands a cinema screen.

For sailing enthusiasts, it’s a rare look inside one of the world’s great ocean races. For any sports fans, it illustrates what leadership, teamwork and determination look like under extreme pressure. And for anyone who loves a compelling human story, True South is a journey back into the storm in honour of someone who never returned.

The documentary is screening for a limited time in selected cinemas across Australia.
