Shopping for Boxing Day deals you can feel good about

Save when you buy, and keep on saving.

We've all been there - swept up in the excitement of massive discounts, grabbing things we don't really need just because they seem like a bargain. That slightly too-small jacket, the half-price gingerbread house (when nobody in your home likes gingerbread) or those kitchen gadgets that definitely don’t do what TikTok led you to believe.

If it's cheap but useless to you, it's not a deal at all.

A $100 item slashed to half price that you’ll never use isn’t $50 saved, but $50 completely wasted. Those impulse buys might feel exciting in the moment, but they're just tomorrow’s clutter. Poor quality isn't a bargain, and neither are items that don't serve a genuine purpose in your life. Marie Kondo told us to hold our possessions in turn and ask ‘Does it spark joy?’. We say, before it becomes your possession, picture it in your home and ask ‘Will I really use this?’.

A smarter way to shop Boxing Day sales

Before diving into any sale, take a strategic approach and make a list of items you actually need. Not just a casual wishlist, but a carefully considered inventory of what would genuinely improve your life. If you sigh every time you take an undercooked chook out of the oven, have to hand-wash items you’ve just removed from the dishwasher, or face the steamy wet room that your old vented dryer has turned your laundry into, then a new oven, dishwasher or heat pump dryer should make the list.

With list in hand, compare prices across multiple retailers, and consider things like stock availability, how trustworthy you (and other customers according to their online reviews) find the retailer, and delivery options: a delivery fee can soon sour the sweet taste of that bargain. A slightly higher price from a trusted retailer with excellent customer service can be worth more than the stress involved with going for the absolute cheapest, but also the absolute worst, option.

Fridges with higher energy star ratings can cost less to run

The appliance buying sweet spot

When it comes to home appliances, Boxing Day sales can be a good opportunity to kickstart your New Year’s resolutions to make some smarter financial and environmental choices.

Keep energy efficiency front of mind when shopping for new appliances. Those star ratings aren't just decorative, they're indicative of ongoing savings and greater environmental responsibility.

Sometimes spending a bit more makes financial sense. A more efficient $900 washing machine with low running costs might save you $100 and hundreds of litres of water annually compared to a less efficient $600 model. As an appliance that runs 24/7 from the moment you first plug it in, energy efficiency should certainly factor when buying a fridge: an energy efficient model might cost $100 less to run easy year than your old fridge, or a less efficient new one.

If you’re looking to reduce the hours you waste hanging and taking down laundry, meanwhile, you might want to consider a heat pump dryer, which can use up to two-thirds less energy than a vented dryer of the same capacity.

Ethical and personal considerations

Approach Boxing Day sales with a critical eye and consider your specific household needs. Rave reviews of a vacuum cleaner based on its ability to cope with dog hair may omit to mention its short battery life, thereby making it less relevant if you have a large home and no pets.

By choosing sale items with good energy ratings, supporting brands with recognised sustainability practices, like Beko, and buying only products that will genuinely improve your life for years to come, you can go beyond surface dollar-saving to find true value in your purchasing power.
