How to move appliances without damaging floors

Here's how to get yourself out of a fridge-moving scrape.

Hard, shiny floors are easy to clean, but also easy to scratch when moving heavy appliances. Vinyl and wood are susceptible to scratches and scuffing, and depending on how deep the marks are, they can be tricky to repair. Small repairs to vinyl floors are relatively simple with fix it kits from hardware stores, but scratches on wooden floorboards may require sanding and then varnishing.

It’s best to avoid the hassle altogether by moving appliances with care. In the case of fridges, make sure that they are empty, to reduce unnecessary weight.

3 steps for a smoother move

There are three tricks you can use to move appliances without damaging floors: cardboard and muscly men, a trolley with wheels and... window cleaner. You read correctly. It's a tip worthy of the bride's father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

1. Tilt and slide method

Tilt the appliance backwards slightly. Slip a thick piece of cardboard or carpet under the front legs, extending it towards the back. Wiggle the appliance forward until the back legs are on the cardboard. Enlist the help of one or two strong individuals to shuffle it out and lift it from the house. Remember proper lifting technique - bend your knees!

2. Trolley technique

Follow step 1 to get the appliance onto cardboard. Once it's free from its original spot, use a two-wheeled cart with a small shelf. Tilt the appliance and slide the shelf underneath. You can now easily roll the appliance out.

3. Slippery solution

If the above methods aren't feasible, try window cleaner on vinyl floors (not recommended for wood). Spray the cleaner under the appliance's feet. This should allow it to slide out smooth as butter. Use this in combination with the trolley method for best results.
