Whether you use it for daily dinners, occasional Sunday roasts or fancy yourself a contestant on The Great Australian Bake Off, there’s little argument that the oven is the heart of the kitchen, which itself is the heart of the home. It’s not surprising that research regularly finds the smell of freshly baked bread to be a helpful tactic for selling houses.
If you’re looking for a new oven, the first thing you should do is check the type and dimensions of your old oven. Is it electric, or gas? Is it freestanding, or built-in (wall mounted)? Is it a single or double oven? The ovens on this list are all electric, built-in, single ovens with integrated grills.
This is by far the most common size and type of oven used in kitchens across Australia. If you’re looking to replace or upsize to a double oven, freestanding oven with cooktop and separate grill, or gas oven, you might want to click here instead of reading the rest of this list.
With hundreds of ovens to choose from, it can be overwhelming trying to compare the many similarities and differences between the models. If you’d rather spend your time baking your next batch of lamingtons or slow roasting a shoulder of lamb, this list is a handy snapshot of some of the electric ovens making their way into lots of kitchens across Australia in 2023-2024.
Here’s a quick look at what these popular electric ovens do and don’t have in common.
Type of oven: The ovens on this list are all built in electric ovens with integrated grills - the most popular type of oven in Australia. Like most models these days, each one on this list is a fan forced convection oven, able to deliver more rapid heat. In terms of brand, Bosch and Westinghouse dominate the list.
Size: These wall ovens all have 60cm width. The height and depth are very similar across all models, with dimensions varying by only a few millimetres. In other words, they are standard sized built-in ovens, so if you’re replacing an old single oven with a new one, it’s very likely that it will fit into the existing space.
Having said this, it’s always worth measuring your old oven before ordering a new one, just to avoid any unwanted surprises come delivery day. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to measure all the dimensions because it’s probably still embedded in the kitchen wall, but just measuring the width and height should be fine.
Incidentally, if you wanted a larger built-in oven than you currently have (i.e. replacing a single oven with a double oven), you would need to organise a carpenter to adjust the size of the wall cavity in which your new oven will be placed.
Oven volume: This is the internal space available for cooking. Despite the fact that all of the ovens on the list are single ovens with almost identical external dimensions, the internal oven capacity can vary. The smallest volume on this list is 66 Litres and the largest is 80 Litres.
Functions and features: The higher end ovens on this list have a greater number of features, such as soft close doors, telescopic runners, live temperature displays and automatic cooking presets. The higher end multifunction ovens also enable greater versatility in the kitchen due to their multiple cooking functions.
Whereas some of the lower priced models on this list have traditional knobs to choose between 5 settings, the highest priced model has touch controls offering 13 functions, from ‘Pizza’ and ‘Hot Air’ to ‘Slow cook’. If you’re unlikely to ever turn the dial to anything other than standard ‘fan forced’, however, a more basic model with fewer settings may be the best oven for you.
Three of the fan forced ovens on the list are also pyrolytic (high temperature self-cleaning). One oven on the list has a Steam Assist cooking and cleaning function, but none of them are full steam ovens.
Where some models from the same brand look almost identical, the different price points may reflect the addition of an extra function, such as Air Frying in the higher priced model.
Power: All of the ovens on this list are electric. The vast majority of ovens sold in Australia are electric, with many people who have a gas cooktop still opting for an electric oven. Gas ovens make up a very small fraction of all oven sales. Dual fuel is even more niche, but well catered to by the brands Ilve and Smeg, and relates to electric freestanding ovens with gas cooktops or gas and induction cooktops.
Remember that you will need to organise a qualified electrician to install any new electric oven (with the exception of the one 'plug & play' model on this list), or to make life easier you can add this service to your shopping cart when ordering your new oven.
Price: The dollar symbols indicate where each model sits on the price scale in relation to this list, from lower cost ($$$) to higher cost ($$$). Just click the links to see the RRP prices, the actual sale prices, as well as the full specs and product reviews. If you are looking for a model with more specialist features, like a steam oven or warming drawer, you’ll generally find it will cost more than the models on this list.
Colour: All of these 10 trending ovens have a black glass oven door and most have some stainless steel trim. There are a handful of built-in single ovens available with a white finish, but these comprise a very small part of the market. You may want your new oven to colour match your existing cooktop , dishwasher , microwave oven or other kitchen appliances, so this may influence the look you go for.
Warranty: All of the wall ovens in this list come with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Disposal of old oven: In addition to providing free delivery on your new oven, Appliances Online can also take away your old oven or hob for recycling, as long as it’s been disconnected and removed from the wall cavity beforehand.
