Samsung launches innovative new TV technology to Australia
September 2nd, 2013
While we’ve all been hearing about the high resolution of 4K TVs and the incredible picture quality of OLED screens for a while now, here in Australia they’ve largely been theoretical discussions. While innovations in telly technology are all well and good, when they’re not available here in the land that’s girt by sea, they may as well be taking place on the moon.
But now, these revolutionary technologies are one step closer to becoming Aussie household names, with the local launch of several new high-tech TVs from Samsung.
The South Korean manufacturer of TVs, AV gear and various other home appliances recently launched not only an Ultra-HD 4K TV, but Australia’s first curved-screen OLED TV.
The two Ultra HD F9000 TVs on display at the Samsung launch event measure 55 and 60 inches, and integrate quad-core processors to help manage the 3D technology, wi-fi, Skype camera and other Smart features such as voice and gesture control.
But the real star of the show, which took place at the Sydney Opera House, was the 55-inch KN55S9C Curved OLED TV, with three major innovative drawcards:
1: The Curved Screen
According to Samsung, the curve of the TV screen positions the edges of the screen at the same distance from the viewer as the centre, delivering a more immersive, cinema-like experience. Appliances Online’s own AV guru Jamie Dickson, seen here stripping down to his jocks in the name of charity, got the chance to view a few curved-screen TVs at CES 2013, and has gone on record describing them as “sexy”.
2: The OLED Picture
If you’re unfamiliar with this shiny new picture technology, the gist of it is that the Organic Light Emitting Diodes can light up each pixel on the screen without the need for backlighting like in regular LED TVs, thus delivering:
- High picture quality
- Low energy consumption
- Super-thin screens
- Deeper, more lifelike images
Not too shabby!
3: Multi View Technology

Using one of these TVs, two people watch two different channels on the one TV at the same time! Yes, you read that right.
Essentially, this system puts BOTH channels on the screen simultaneously, and the viewers wear powered 3D Glasses (the kind used in Active 3D TVs) that actively “sync” with the TV to control which set of images they see. The glasses also contain miniature headphones, so that each viewer can enjoy their own independent soundtrack as well. Viewers can swap between the two shows at the touch of a button, with no need to change glasses.
Of course, Samsung isn’t the only TV manufacturer to be developing new TV technology to be brought to Australia. LG is also understood to have a curved OLED TV in the works, integrating a feature called Dual Play for multiplayer console gaming, which uses 3D glasses to let each player enjoy full use of the screen, rather than trying to concentrate on their tiny section on a split-screen.

While it would certainly be cool to get the full benefit of a big-screen TV in a multiplayer game, imagine how differently all those games of Mario Kart or GoldenEye could have turned out if you weren’t able to peek into the next player’s screen and spy on what they were up to…
No matter the brand, we look forward to seeing what new innovations in TV technology will be appearing in Australia in the future. We always like to stay… ahead of the curve (Geddit? Boom-boom!).
