Hi Barry, Thank you for your enquiry, Fisher & Paykel has specified that this particular cooktop does not come with any underneath protection. Whilst installing the unit, they recommend leaving a air gap/space for heat resistance and ventilation. This spacing is called a thermal protective barrier > Please see page 10 on User Manual for more info.
