About Onkyo

In April 1946, Takeshi Godai established Onkyo, Japanese for ‘sound acoustics’, with the intent of creating incredible dynamic speakers. Every innovation and every glorious piece of audio equipment that has been released over Onkyo’s history, has served to present and extend this commitment to amazing sound.

Desiring to rise above what was available, in 1948, Onkyo began the in-house development and production of their own paper cones, instead of the more common premade, imported cones. Fast-forward a few years to 1956; three coaxial-type speaker models are being released, featuring a tweeter incorporated into the centre of the woofer cone.

Then 1968 arrived, marking a time when Onkyo expanded upon delivering audiophile-quality sound to the mass consumer market. This was met with the arrival, and success, of the Quad-amp MC2200, bringing magnificent audio out of the studios, and into the home. But that doesn’t mean Onkyo ever moved out of the studio; 1978 marked the debut of the SL-1, one of the first production subwoofers ever released. Aside from its mastery of the lower frequencies, the SL-1 was at the forefront of models to feature a Class D Pulse Width Modulation Amp inside the cabinet. This is a feature that’s now incorporated in most modern active subwoofers.

This pattern of constant innovation and audio improvements is a cornerstone of Onkyo, and it doesn’t end with the Pulse Width Modulation Amp either. Developing the first six-disc carousel CD player, the first AVR with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, as well as the first Windows-Certified A/V Receiver with Pandora, Onkyo has been dedicated to making audio sharper. And this is just scratching the surface of what the last twenty years have enabled Onkyo to develop and create.

Over 70 years have passed since Onkyo first began producing their unique brand of audio equipment, and they still maintain that same innovative spark they had on their very first day.
