Window Air Conditioner Buying Guide

Window air conditioners are suitable for regulating the temperature of small to medium-sized rooms such as bedrooms or studies. As the name suggests, they are designed to be mounted in a window, but sometimes they can be installed in a wall.

For best results, we recommend that you arrange to have your new window air conditioner professionally installed.

Getting the right size

As a basic starting point, you?ll need a window air conditioner with around 1-1.5 kilowatts of cooling capacity per every 10 square meters (sqm) of space that needs to be cooled.

The table below should give you a rough idea:

20sqm

2.8 Kilowatts

30sqm

4.2 Kilowatts

40sqm

5.6 Kilowatts

There are other factors that will affect the performance of your window air conditioner. These include:

  • Height of the ceiling
  • Whether or not your ceiling and walls are insulated
  • The location and size of the windows, and the direction they face
  • The climate you are living in

Features to consider

Reverse cycle

Some window air conditioners provide the option of heating as well as cooling. Thus, you can keep your home toasty warm in winter, yet refreshingly cool in summer.

Anti-bacterial mesh

If you or anyone in your home suffers from respiratory problems, look for a window air conditioner with an anti-bacterial mesh filter. This feature removes microscopic particles and bacteria from the air as it is cooled, easing conditions for allergy sufferers.

Remote control

Remote control is a handy feature that enables you to switch your window air conditioner on or off, and adjust the temperature without needing to get up and walk over to it. Especially useful in a bedroom, as it allows you to stay in bed!

Timer

Another useful feature to look out for is a timer. Timers enable you to set the window air conditioner to start operating before you get home from work, so you can walk into a lovely cool home at the end of a hard day. Window air conditioners with a timer function can also be set to switch off during the night, to save electricity while you're asleep.

Sleep mode

Some window air conditioners come with a sleep mode that is specifically designed to help you get to sleep. Perfect for hot summer nights!
