Expert tips for washing delicates

Having a good washing machine is one thing, knowing the best way to use it is another - especially when it comes to washing delicates. In this blog post we share some expert tips for doing just that.

Understand your fabrics
  • Before you start the washing process, it's crucial to understand the type of fabric you're dealing with. Delicate fabrics include silk, lace, cashmere, and certain types of wool. Always check the garment's label for specific washing instructions.
Use the right detergent
  • Many leading washing machine brands, like Bosch and Samsung, recommend using a gentle detergent for delicate fabrics. These detergents are usually free from harsh chemicals that can damage delicate fibres.
Choose the correct cycle
  • Most modern washing machines come with a variety of cycles designed for different types of clothing. Brands like LG and Fisher & Paykel often include a 'delicate' or 'hand wash' cycle in their machines, which use less agitation and a slower spin speed to protect your delicate items.
Avoid Overloading
  • Overloading your washing machine can lead to damage, not only to the machine but also to your clothes. Leading brands like Whirlpool and Electrolux advise loading your machine to no more than half its capacity when washing delicates.
Air-Dry When Possible
  • Finally, when it comes to drying your delicates, air-drying is usually the best option. Tumble drying can cause shrinkage and damage to delicate fabrics. If you do need to use a dryer, brands like Miele recommend using the lowest heat setting.
