RV Camping Buying Guide

RV Camping Buying Guide

A recreational vehicle (RV) is an umbrella term for all motorised homes and camping vehicles. These include motorhomes, campervans, and caravans/travel trailer. They are a great choice for campers who like to travel around Australia with in home on wheels. Whether you are towing a new caravan, camper trailer, or pop top to all your favourite Australian destinations, you can travel in comfort from the top of Queensland to the bottom of Tasmania.

The appliances you can use will depend on the type of RV you have. When it comes to appliances for an RV, bigger is not always better. You have limited space in your RV kitchen, so the size of the appliances you take with you is crucial. What you choose to bring depends on what is important to you.

Things to consider

How long will your trip be?

If you’re going on a weekend road trip, an icebox may be the best choice for preserving food. If you are embarking on a cross-country tour that will last a couple of months, a portable fridge or caravan freezer is more suitable.

Which types of appliances and how many of these can your RV power?

Which appliances you can run in your RV and how many can be turned on at the same time depends on a few factors. Whether you are using a generator, solar panels, or hooking up your RV at a campsite, you need to ensure your electricity source can power the appliances you are bringing with you. You probably won’t be able to use the same appliances you have at home inside your RV as they may use too much electricity. For better efficiency, look for appliances with a lower capacity such as compact microwaves and 2-Slice Toasters.

What is the weather and climate of the places you are travelling to?

If locations on your itinerary tend to be humid, it’s advisable to bring a compact dehumidifier to prevent your RV from being muggy. Going somewhere hot and dry? Take an evaporative cooler and make your travels more comfortable. There are times of the year when the temperature drops to freezing at night, even in the outback. In this situation, an electric blanket to use at bedtime may suffice.

And to protect yourself from the sun and sunburn, make sure to bring an awning or shade with you, so you can enjoy sitting outside without being directly hit with UV rays.

What creature comforts can you simply not live without?

While camping and the RV lifestyle may be all about foregoing certain luxuries we have at home, there are some things we simply cannot live without. If you can’t live without your morning smoothie, a small blender will be an important addition. If you must have a brewed espresso every morning, a more portable alternative, such as an induction espresso maker may be suitable to your needs.

What types of food and drink do you like to consume?

Are jaffles your go-to snack? Don’t leave home without your sandwich maker. If you like to celebrate with a cold one after arriving at your destination, you may want to purchase a portable fridge. If you want to prepare family feasts, a versatile all-in-one cooker will become your favourite appliance.

Which activities do you have planned?

Like to go out fishing? An icebox can keep your catch cool and you can put them in the caravan freezer to cook later. Don’t go on a hike without filling your belly with fuel. Make a healthy smoothie with a compact blender or enjoy warm toast with an espresso with a compact toaster and capsule coffee machine.

When preparing and cooking meals in your motorhome or caravan, you need appliances that are compact and versatile. These compact appliances will save space, while adding the convenience of cooking and cleaning just like you do at home.

Compact Microwaves

The humble microwave is one of the most used appliances at home, but it is especially handy when you are on the road. A compact microwave can heat up frozen meals, as well as prepare a quick meal after a day of hiking, fishing, or exploring. These compact microwaves will take up less space and use less power to ensure your RV kitchen is not crammed and your RV batteries are not drained.

Benchtop Dishwashers

Benchtop dishwashers are ideal for busy adventurers and time-poor families with children. Thanks to a compact design, benchtop dishwashers can sit on top of most RV kitchen benchtops, and they will save you a lot of labour. This convenient option means you’re not wasting precious time in front of the sink — use that time to bond with loved ones or to take in the natural surroundings.

Multitasking appliances saves you from having to travel with multiple items. Don’t settle for rest stop meals or gas stop suppers on your journey. Make home-cooked meals away from home in your RV.

Convection Microwaves

While some RVs come with built-in ovens, these units are prone to overheat a small space. A convection microwave is an excellent alternative as it uses a fan to circulate heated air, enabling it to cook food at a lower temperature. By combining the functionalities of an oven and a microwave, you can save plenty of space.

Multicookers

You can create a wide range of dishes with a multi-cooker, meaning you won’t be stuck with the same set of meals while you are on the road. Small in size but very versatile, a multi-cooker can cook a wide range of ingredients such as grains, meats, and vegetables. You can set your multi-cooker to run while you’re out hiking or swimming, so you can come back to your RV with a hot meal waiting for you.

Coffee Brewers

If you’re travelling very light but you prefer a proper espresso brew over instant coffee, a stovetop espresso maker (also known as a Moka pot or coffee percolator) is a great option. This ultra-portable appliance only needs water, ground coffee, and a heat source to give you the perfect cup of coffee. There are options to suit a variety of heat sources such as an electric or gas stove. If your RV has an induction cooktop, look for espresso makers designed specifically for induction.

• When your RV is not in use, you can use a dehumidifier to prevent mould and mildew from growing.

Keep your RV on the right track and prevent unwanted detours with a GPS navigation system. You can also equip your RV with a dash cam so you can drive with peace of mind and be insured in case of hiccups on the road. A breathalyser is also a handy device to have with you when you’re frequently on the road to ensure your drinking doesn’t get out of hand.

GPS Navigation

Some GPS and navigation systems feature helpful information for large vehicles such as an RV. This alerts you if there are any restrictions for your vehicle on the route ahead so you can better plan your way. Look for models with safety features such as driver fatigue alerts and speed limit notifications. A dedicated GPS system is a better option for long drives compared to a GPS app on your phone, and you won’t have to worry about draining your phone’s battery. Additionally, you have more memory space to store maps and routes for offline use - particularly useful when you are travelling in remote areas.

Dash Cams

A dash cam helps protect you while you are on the road. Should an incident occur, a dash cam will record driving activity from the front of your vehicle. This provides you with video evidence for police reports, insurance claims, or ticket disputes. Opt for a model with G-Sensor - this feature detects vehicular impact and automatically saves footage so it does not get overwritten. For additional RV security, a dash cam can record theft or break-ins when your RV is unattended. On a more positive note, a dash cam can capture your road trip memories for you to look back on at the end of the trip. Look for models with a wide field of vision to capture the changing landscapes during your drive.
