Outdoor Heating Buying Guide

Outdoor Heating Buying Guide

If you believe barbecues and outdoor gatherings are strictly suited to the summer, you’re probably lacking an effective outdoor heating solution. Dragging your lounge room heater to your alfresco area is not recommended, and layering up with warm clothes is too much of a balancing act. A dedicated heater for your outdoor entertaining area is a crowd-pleasing solution, helping you create an environment where guests want to get settled. With an ever-evolving market, you are no longer limited to gas and electric options. Additionally, outdoor heater designs are getting more creative as time goes on. We hope the below buying guide will help you choose an outdoor heater that will stop your shivering and sit seamlessly with the other elements of your outdoor space.

Outdoor Gas Heaters

Gas heaters are renowned for their ability to provide consistent, radiant heat. They are most effective when positioned in the centre of your entertaining area, and most models are designed for portability in conjunction with bottled gas, so there is little fuss involved in going from patio to poolside.

Patio gas heaters

Commonly used by restaurants and bars to provide comforting warmth to clusters of patrons, freestanding gas patio heaters are a great choice for households that host frequent, bustling get-togethers. Enjoy the generous, odourless heat output, but make sure you pay attention to the height of the unit to ensure there are no clearance issues. Look for a sturdy base that will prevent the unit from accidentally tipping over, but most outdoor patio heaters will automatically switch off if such an accident occurs. Simple controls that minimise your time out in the cold are also a big plus.

Radiant gas heaters

By definition, radiant heaters emanate infrared rays of heat onto surfaces such as skin and clothing, bypassing the air between. Most outdoor radiant infrared heaters run off electricity, but you can find gas models if you search hard enough. Gasmate’s Solaris Ceramic Radiant Heater is one such example. Great for use in alfresco areas, verandahs, and garages, operation is silent and it can heat an area of up to 20 square metres. Please note this model will need to be connected to natural gas, so a licenced plumber is required for installation.

Fire pits

Not all outdoor fire pits require you to get your hands dirty collecting wood. A gas-powered fire pit can be an attractive, toasty heating solution for small gatherings under the stars. These fire pits generally have adjustable flame heights, and many of them are resistant to severe weather conditions.

Outdoor Electric Heaters

Given their popularity inside the home, it’s no surprise many people favour an electric outdoor heater for their entertaining area. Unobtrusive, simple to use, and compatible with nearly any decor, electric heaters are excellent for providing targeted warmth.

Radiant electric heaters

Like radiant gas heaters, radiant electric heaters are effective for heating nearby surfaces. Many of these units are designed as strip heaters, allowing you to wall- or ceiling-mount them with little to no fuss. Larger outdoor areas may require more than one electric radiant heater for optimum warmth, which is viable due to their more affordable price point. Look for models with remote controls for convenient operation, LED lights for increased illumination, and automatic timers for energy savings.

Electric fireplaces

Turn on the old-time charm without any of the grunt work by installing an electric outdoor fireplace. These heaters come in various shapes and sizes and give you plenty of control over the pattern and colour of the flame effect. Electric fireplaces are a neat finishing touch for home bar setups or alfresco areas that are continuations of kitchens. Hidden venting and the absence of glowing grilles will make for a convincing illusion of genuine flames.

Outdoor ethanol heaters

Ethanol heaters are gaining in popularity due to their clean emissions and diverse installation setups. These models generally consist of a burner that holds fuel and a microprocessor that monitors and controls the flames. Planika is a premier brand in this market, offering ethanol heaters in the form of fire pits, totem pillars, and even functional coffee tables with glass tabletops. These units are popular by the pool, and some people like to buy multiple heaters to line a garden pathway. Bear in mind ethanol heaters generally produce a milder heat compared to other fuel types, so they are not recommended for areas that get extra chilly.

Wood-fuelled fire pits

For many people, it’s hard to go past the warmth provided by a wood-fuelled fire pit. There’s something inherently alluring about a wood fire; you can’t glance at one without wanting to wander over. At the moment, Appliances Online only stocks one wood-fuelled fire pit, and the unsuspecting eye wouldn’t even know it’s a fire pit! The DrumGrill Drum BBQ is a grill first and foremost, but once you’ve finished your burger patties, snapper, or eggplant, you can remove the grill insert and convert the unit into an open fire pit. It’s a nifty solution, but there’s not much you can do if there’s a sudden downpour, and the smell of burning wood may stick to your clothes.

How to Efficiently Heat Your Home

When trying to determine the most efficient heater for your home or outdoor areas, you need to consider the size of the space you’re looking to heat, the layout of the area, and the climate. If you live in a colder climate, you may benefit from multiple heaters in your outdoor entertaining areas to keep you cosy.

Larger entertaining areas may require multiple radiant heaters all directing their heat towards different areas of your space or a gas patio heater in the centre to radiate heat outwards.

The most important considerations when looking for an efficient heater are the size and fuel type. Often, a larger heater will output a larger proportion of heat and will consume higher amounts of energy, so you need to make sure the size is suitable for your space.

Electric or Gas Heaters?

Gas heaters come in two varieties: natural gas models which connect to the gas main in your home and LPG, running off gas tanks. If you want to be able to move your heater around the outdoor areas of your home, a portable LPG model such as a patio heater may be optimal.

If you don’t already have an LPG tank, you will need to purchase one and refill it when it gets low. Refilling tanks is generally cheaper than purchasing a new one so it can be a reduced expense in the long run. Due to their design and fuel source, natural gas heaters tend to be more stationary.

Since they both use gas, it’s important to place gas heaters in a ventilated area or flue them, so any fumes can safely dissipate.

Electric heaters are easy to use and maintain, simply needing connection to a power source. Costs for running an electric heater can depend on the energy efficiency of the model, the current energy prices, and how long you run the appliance for. If you have solar panels, an electric heater may be an effective model due to offset power costs. Electric heaters are great for heating smaller areas for fewer people.

Electric heaters can provide you with the experience of live flames, as is the case with Amantii freestanding and built-in fireplaces. These flames even feature customisable colours, to suit your decor, your mood, or favourite hues.
