Who is the ABSC?
A not-for-profit backed by the Australian government, the ABSC is working to make the mattress and bedding industry more sustainable. The ABSC was established in 2020 with the aim of managing the impact of bedding products and materials on the environment, and on human health and safety.
By partnering with manufacturers, supply chain partners, retailers and recyclers, it is working to improve every part of the product life cycle in an effort to push the bedding industry towards a more sustainable circular economy.
What are the aims of the ABSC?
The ABSC aims to wake Australia up to our critical need for more sustainable sleep. Its strategy tackles this issue in three main directions. Growing public awareness of the environmental problems caused by irresponsible mattress disposal, and the benefits we can bring to people and the planet if we act more sustainably.
Expanding the recycler network, and facilitating opportunities to make responsible end-of-life mattress recycling easier for everyday Australians. Spearheading Research & Development into new recycling processes that support our end aim of a circular economy. In essence, this means finding new uses for old mattress components that are currently going to waste.
What is the ABSC doing?
Growing awareness of the problem - We’re raising public awareness of the problems caused by irresponsible mattress disposal, and the benefits that can be created if we act more sustainably.
Research & development - We’re researching new uses for old mattress components that are yet to find a commercial solution. Through this work we aim to create a more circular approach.
Increase the recycler network - We’re working to expand and improve Australia’s recycling networks, making responsible end-of-life mattress recycling easier for consumers.
