Simpler though it may have been to choose in those days, thankfully we’ve come a long way since then and now have models to suit every family, kitchen and home.

Before we look at the different refrigerators, here’s an overview of the models that topped the list.

Type of fridge: Bottom mount fridges are the most popular configuration, with 5 models on the list. Top mounts are close behind with 4. The list is rounded out by 1 French door refrigerator. Every model is a flat door design with recessed handles.

Fridge capacity: The capacity of these fridges refers to the total capacity of usable fridge and freezer space combined. In general, freezer space will take up around 25-30% of the total capacity of a fridge freezer. The models on this list range from compact 202L units suited to singles and couples, up to a spacious 509L French door model for larger families.

Of course, capacity affects the external dimensions, and the layout of your kitchen can influence the style of fridge you choose (fridge door clearance is something you should consider before buying).

Price: The dollar symbols indicate where each model sits on the price scale in relation to this list, from lower cost ($ - under $700) to mid ($$ - $700-$1,400) and higher cost ($$$ - over $1,400). The Haier 509L French door is the highest priced fridge on the list, but it's also the largest and offers premium features like a water dispenser, which goes a long way to explaining its higher cost. For a 'price per litre' of storage space, divide the purchase price by the capacity.

Of course, this sum doesn't factor in other features such as materials, water dispensers and technological inclusions that can account for higher purchase costs, but it can allow for a generally more balanced comparison. Comparing the full purchase price, therefore, is of more use when comparing similarly sized models. NOTE: The prices used for comparison purposes here are the RRP - but at Appliances Online we sell fridges at below RRP when possible (which is often).

Running costs: At a glance it appears that some of these fridges are much cheaper to run each year than others, but that's largely to do with capacity. All other things being equal, such as energy efficiency, a small fridge of 200L capacity should be considerably cheaper to run than a model twice its size. However, if the bigger fridge were to be much more energy efficient, the annual running costs may be very similar.

The only 5.5 Energy Star-rated fridge on this list (#8. Haier 433L bottom mount) has remarkably low annual running costs of just $74 despite its mid-size capacity, demonstrating how efficiency can offset size when it comes to running costs. You may pay more to buy a more efficient fridge, but over its lifetime you could find that it recoups you that initial price difference by means of lower electricity bills.

Energy efficiency: Higher Energy Star ratings equate to lower energy consumption and running costs. Fridges are one of the few home appliances that run 24/7 (along with freezers), so energy efficiency is an important consideration when buying a new one.

Haier has the fridge with the highest energy efficiency on this list, with its impressive 5.5 star bottom mount model. The most common Energy Star rating is 5 stars (5 models), followed by 4.5 stars (3 models) and 4 stars (2 models). CHiQ stands out as a budget-friendly brand with consistently strong 5-star ratings across its range.

Colour: When are white goods not white goods? When they're stainless steel or silver. The days of fridges being predominantly white are long gone, with 6 models on this list having some variation of stainless steel or silver finish (standard, arctic silver, or satina). The other 4 models have a white finish. These days, you can choose a fridge in all sorts of colours, particularly if you're a fan of retro designs in pastel shades, but they are more of a niche choice, so none made this bestsellers list.

Brands: Budget-friendly brand CHiQ leads with 4 models on the list, demonstrating strong value across multiple configurations. Haier has 2 entries, while Samsung, Westinghouse, Hisense and LG each have one model featured.

Warranty: Six of the fridges on the list have a 2-year manufacturer warranty, and four have 3-year warranties. Notably, it is the more budget-friendly CHiQ and Hisense models that offer the longer 3-year warranties. Several of the fridges also include an additional 10-year warranty on compressor (parts only).
