The rangehood you choose will depend on the amount of room you have in your kitchen, as well as where your cooktop is located. Let's explore the different types of rangehoods available:

Canopy style rangehoods are usually positioned against the wall, above your cooking area. They remove heat, steam, grease, and odours from your kitchen through ducted vents. Most models duct air outside through the wall or roof, although some models allow you to recirculate the air. For example, an island cooktop will require a canopy or island rangehood. Island rangehoods are designed to be installed in the ceiling, above a freestanding cooking 'island'. These canopy hoods look great and they also extract air quickly and efficiently.

Retractable or slide-out rangehoods can be built into the cupboard space above your stove, and they are a great option for those with small kitchens. Because of their minimalistic design, they will coordinate perfectly with your existing kitchen décor.

Fixed rangehoods can be installed against the wall, and they generally take up less space than a canopy style extractor hood. If space is an issue, you could consider an under-cupboard rangehood, which can be integrated seamlessly into your cabinetry.

There are two main venting options: ducted and recirculating. Ducted rangehoods draw smoke and odours from your kitchen and vent them outside. When ducting is not a possible option, recirculating rangehoods draw fumes and send them through filters, this filtered air is then recirculated back into the room. Keeping your rangehood clean will extend its lifespan and create a cleaner, safer kitchen environment.

Some modern rangehoods will automatically alert you when the filters need cleaning. For those that don’t, most manufacturers will recommend that filters be cleaned about once a month to keep them functioning effectively.

Some stainless steel filters can be simply popped into your dishwasher for an easy clean. Take a look at your manufacturer’s manual to see if this is the case. Otherwise, we suggest filling your sink with hot water and dish detergent and leave it to soak for ten minutes or so.  Then, give them a good scrub to remove any dirt and then rinse with clean water.  Make sure the filters are dry before putting them back into the rangehood.

On the other hand, rangehoods using carbon filters will need to be replaced once they reach the end of their useful lifespan. Their lifespan depends on how often you cook as well as your cooking style, but in general around every four to six months is recommended.  It’s best to check with your manufacturer’s manual.

Exterior cleaning is simple, just use a damp cloth with a multi-purpose cleaner and wipe down. Avoid spraying any degreasers directly onto the surface of the rangehood. Be sure to disconnect the rangehood from the power supply before heading into any nooks or crannies.
