More weird and wacky toasters

Appliance Talk Toasters & Kettles

In the tradition of our previous blog, “Ten terrific toasters in weird and wacky designs“, we’re taking another look across the web for more innovations in the strange and unusual world of breakfast bread preparation.

While Appliances Online does stock a variety of great-looking toasters, unfortunately we aren’t able to offer you any of the following products.  Many of them are concept designs or custom-built inventions that aren’t for retail sale at all.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t admire these toasters and toast-related products, and marvel at the profoundly strange ingenuity that lies behind each design.

On with the show!

Toaster bags

It’s an old trick to make cheese on toast or a toasted sandwich by putting the bread and fillings in a toaster that’s been turned on its side.  However, this can be a tricky proposition, as it’s very easy for the toaster’s inner workings to get all gunked up.  And don’t even think about hash browns…

Maybe that’s why some clever clogs out there invented the Toaster Bag, which lets sandwiches stay together while they toasts and protects the appliance’s inner workings.  Armed with these bags, you could even try toasting sandwiches in the upright position, though gravity may be against you…

Cinderella toaster

As seen last time, there are many examples of toasters that burn cute designs into your bread.

But this one I felt was worth adding to the collection, purely because it’s Cinderella.

Get it?

Cinder-ella.

It’s a pun.  On the word ‘cinder’. As in ‘burnt to a cinder’.  As in toast.

Ah, forget it.

Toaster computer

Technical types would be aware that a desktop computer can look like pretty much anything.

While most of us keep our hard drives and motherboards inside boxy rectangular cases, some enterprising types have gone and put their bits and bobs into the hard metal shells of toasters, to give the study a more ‘breakfasty’ look.

Just don’t put any bread inside one of these.  Put it inside one of these, instead:

Definitely don’t get the two confused.

Gaming toasters

Similar to the computer example above, some cunning artificers have taken the components of their favourite gaming consoles and transplanted them into toasters, such as this Xbox 360.

The reverse is also true, such as in the case of this old-school Nintendo inspired toaster, which has the toast going right into the cartridge slot.

Don’t forget to blow on the bread first!

Toaster-inspired iPod/iPhone dock and battery charger

These gadgets just go to show that the classic design of the everyday toaster can be be put to work in many different applications.

Remember, don’t put your iThings or batteries in your regular toaster, unless you enjoy the taste of electricity.

VW toaster

Never quite got past the swinging 60’s?  Born in the wrong era?  Feeling the need for something retro?

Embrace one of the era’s iconic brands in the form of the VW-inspired toaster, even looks the part.

Space invader toaster

Sticking with the retro-charm theme, old-school gamers can turn breakfast into a return to the days of arcades and beeping electronic music.

Remember to shoot at where the toast is going, and not at where it is!

Giant Heinz toaster

I’m not sure if this was meant as some kind of publicity stunt, but apparently the designer of this toaster really, REALLY wanted his baked beans to be served on HOT toast, hence the massive air intake fans that blast hot air to deliver toast in 50 seconds.

I doubt that jet engines would be too practical in an everyday kitchen though, where bench space is a precious commodity.

Modular toaster

We don’t always use all of the slots on out toaster.  Sometimes we want four slices, sometimes just one.

Sometimes we curse ourselves for buying a toaster that’s too big, or cry out for a bigger toaster.

A modular toaster lets you add or subtract slots, so you can resize the toaster to suit your breakfast.  How handy!

Tree toaster

Even when they’re crafted from chrome or shiny and sleek stainless steel, toasters aren’t always a pleasure to look at when sitting in the corner of your kitchen.

With a toaster shaped like a tree though, your kitchen can benefit from a touch of elegance that otherwise just wouldn’t be possible.

Radio toaster

Everyone loves two appliances in one.  That’s why we have things like washer/dryer combos and convection microwaves (which can be used to microwave or oven-cook).

Combining your toaster with a radio would let you enjoy the morning chatter of your favourite breakfast DJs as well as your favourite breakfast snacks.

Hot dog toaster

I’m one of those people that actually likes hot dogs.  Yes, I know they’re often made from poor-quality buns and almost-artificial meat, but I love the bowel-clenching things anyway.

The only thing that could make them better (besides genuine quality) would be to toast the buns in something like this hot dog toaster.  Plus, it cooks the sausages at the same time, meaning there’s no need to multitask!

VCR/cassette toaster

Many of us have an all-but useless VCR sitting around at the back of the cupboard, its role having been supplanted by a DVD or Blu-ray player.

Put the shell of your VCR to good use by filling it with toaster parts, and give your kitchen some late-80s/early 90’s retro cred.

In a similar vein, this toaster uses a door styled after an old cassette deck to give you more convenient access to your toast.

Tic tac toast

Bored at breakfast?  No more!

For a bit of healthy competition at the breakfast table, play a swift game of Noughts and Crosses on your toast… or Jams and Peanut Butters.

Talkie toaster

The benefits of a toaster with artifical intelligence, first appearing on Red Dwarf, really speak for themselves.

Mark joined Appliances Online in November 2011 and has since learned more than he ever expected to know about appliances. He enjoys looking for new and unusual ways for to solve everyday problems using typical household appliances. When he’s not toiling at the desks of Appliances Online and Big Brown Box, he tries to find time to write the next big bestseller and draw satirical cartoons, but is too easily distracted by TV, music and video games. Mark’s favourite appliance is the Dyson Groom Tool, as he loves the concept of vacuuming your dog. Google+

I think the Radio Toaster would have the potential to be a good seller provided it survives….
