Wine Storage

Yesterday Damien from Vintec came in to talk to the Appliances Online team about the ins and outs of wine storage.

If you’re a lover of fine wine, it’s important to store it properly so you can get the most out of your investment. Many people mistakenly believe that temperature control is the only factor that matters when it comes to wine storage, but there’s actually a lot more to it than that. Here are the main reasons why a Vintec wine cabinet is far better suited to wine storage than an ordinary refrigerator:

Vibration absorbers

Vibrations can upset the delicate chemical reactions that take place in wine, improving its flavour. The motors in ordinary fridges tend to create vibrations, which over time can spoil the wine in the same way that fruit becomes bruised if dropped or knocked. In addition to this, the wire racks often found in normal fridges can accentuate these vibrations and create temperature fluctuations where the bottle is touching metal.

Vintec solves this problem by placing the slow cycling compressors outside the main body of the unit on rubber shock absorbers. Also, wooden shelving is used because it doesn’t vibrate.

UV treated glass door

The UV rays found in natural and fluorescent light is damaging to wines, which is why all Vintec triple-glazed glass doors are UV treated.

Humidity control

Maintaining a humidity level of around 55% is especially important when you’re storing corked wine, as it prevents the cork from drying out. Nonetheless humidity control is an important factor for all wine storage which is why Vintec wine cabinets have been specially designed to maintain a constant humidity level. For best results, do not let your wines touch the back of the cabinet.

Temperature control

The perfect temperature for wine storage is between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. All wines (including whites, reds, and champagnes) should be stored at the same temperature – in the same way that different types of food can be frozen at the same temperature. Vintec wine fridges not only maintain the perfect temperature, they bring the temperature down slowly to help the wine to acclimatise (as temperature shocks can adversely affect the aging process).

Serving temperatures vary depending on the type of wine you’re serving (for instance a chardonnay should be served at a slightly different temperature to a riesling). If you want a wine cabinet for storing wine AND for serving wine, you should invest in a multi-temperature Vintec wine cabinet (such as the VIN150SGERH model).

Please note that wine cabinets are not suitable for storing perishable food.
