Peter Harris, General Manager of Appliances Online, said the research demonstrates that even though the same proportion of Australians will do their Christmas online this year, online retail outlets can expect more consumers to do the majority of their Christmas shopping online (compared with last year).

“It’s great news for online retailers this Christmas, as they can expect a similar amount of traffic as last year, however they could experience growth in the volume of purchases, as more Australian consumers will do the majority of their Christmas shopping online in 2012.  Confidence in shopping online has also increased a percentage to 84% this year, supporting the positive outlook for online retailer this festive season.

“The popularity of online retailing at Christmas has increased in every state in Australia, excluding Queensland which remained steady, with the amount of consumers doing their majority of shopping online increasing. Generation X and Y shoppers are also favouring online for the majority of their Christmas shopping than last year. Music, books, fashionwear and technology remain this year’s most popular categories, with appliances purchases more popular this year than in 2011.

“Given the positive outlook of shopping online, retailers must ensure that the purchasing experience they are offering is convenient, cost-effective, on-time and hassle-free. Appliances Online is the nation’s largest online retailer of appliances and the first Australian online retailer to offer 24/7 locally based customer support. End-to-end customer service is a defining factor in securing a customer’s trust. Appliances Online delivers to 98% of the population and stocks more brands than any other online appliance retailer.” Mr Harris said.

The Galaxy Research survey for Appliances Online was conducted via an online research panel of 1004 Australians aged 18 to 64 years.
