BOM reveals what temperatures to expect this autumn
March 26th, 2012
The majority of Australians could be cranking up the heater earlier than expected, according to temperature outlooks from the Bureau of Meteorology.
The east coast of Australia is more likely to experience cooler days this Autumn thanks to the warmer than normal waters over the Indian Ocean.
The report said that the cooler Pacific waters associated with La NiƱa “have had a lesser impact”.
On the east coast there is only a 25 per cent chance that the average April to June maximum temperature will exceed the long-term median maximum temperature, according to the National Seasonal Temperature Outlook: probabilities for April to June 2012.
Furthermore, BOM is predicting perhaps warmer days, but cooler nights for the east.
It’s findings show:
- Warmer days and colder nights are more likely over Victoria, Tasmania, and southern parts of NSW and SA
- Cooler days and warmer nights are more likely in northeastern NSW
By contrast, Western Australia, South Australia and parts of the north have a much greater chance of experiencing warmer weather. BOM forecasts show that WA has an 80 per cent chance of experiencing both warmer days and nights.
Overall, the temperature outlook shows:
- Warmer days are more likely over the tropical north and southern Australia
- Cooler days are more likely over parts of central and eastern Australia
- Warmer nights are more likely over southern WA and northeast Australia
- Cooler nights are more likely over northwest, central and southeast Australia
