Is your Mum special?

Of course she is – what kind of question is that?

It’s important to give back to the ones we love, and a great way to show Mum our appreciation is to prepare a tasty treat to enjoy with her.

Here are a few delicious treats that yuo can make for Mum this Mother’s Day – it’s simpler than you think!

Home made ice cream

While everyone loves those premium ice cream tubs with the cookie dough, fudge swirls, and punny names, did you know that it’s actually super-easy to make your own ice cream, WITHOUT requiring a specialised ice cream machine?

You’ll need to start with cream (obviously), and add milk, sugar, and possibly eggs, if you’re going for a more custardy flavour and consistency. Stick the lot in a saucepan on a low heat, along with any flavourings you prefer (experiment to find what works best!), until everything’s properly dissolved and combined.

Refrigerate the mixture until chilled, then place in a bowl that’s spent some hours in the freezer, and stir like heck until it reaches your preferred consistency. Keep the mixture nicely chilled by sticking it back in the freezer between stirring sessions – the stirring will help aerate the mixture and break down any ice crystals that start to form.

This method (cobbled together from the basics of a few different online recipes – check your favourite cooking site for more precise measurements and instructions) can be a lot of hard work – while it doesn’t require a specialised ice cream machine, if you’d rather not enjoy an intense arm workout, your best bet is to use a food mixer for the stirring.

Whether you serve your fresh ice cream immediately, or keep it frozen for later, you’ll be in for a treat.

Healthy (and delicious!) juice

Proper nutrition is important to people of all ages, but so is having your healthiest food and drink not taste awful.

Plus, eating takes time, and busy mums don’t always get the chance to properly enjoy their daily fruit and veg requirement, leaving them run-down and out of energy.

A great way to get a day’s worth of fruit and veg all in one go is to prepare a tasty and nutritious juice. All the goodness you need, and all able to be enjoyed in just a few short sips.

This is where a food processor with a juicer attachment really comes into its own – juicing all of your fruits and veggies by hand can take just as much time and effort as eating them one at a time. Rather than juicing by hand, let a machine take care of the hard work!

Soup on the go

Much like juice, soup is another great way to combine a wide variety of ingredients into a single hearty meal, making it a highly efficient nutrition delivery system. This may not be the way most of us traditionally think of soup, but the proof is in the pudding… well, rather, the soup.

But again, soup can represent a bit of a time and effort commitment. Putting aside the preparation time, it’s not always convenient to sit down to a piping bowl of the good stuff, especially for a mum on the go.

One quick way to prepare soup is to combine your heated ingredients in a blender. Once your soup is ready, it’s simple enough to decant the mixture into a thermos to be enjoyed at a time that’s more convenient for you.
