How to fit a kitchen in a compact space

Kitchen

For the launch of Sophie’s Space I decided I would focus on designing in compact spaces, in particular pocket sized kitchens.  I have found that this topic is a growing issue for the majority of us, as spaces seem to shrink and prices seem to keep increasing.

The trick I believe is to find the balance between creating a space that works from a practical perspective, but of course is also a visually appealing and enjoyable space to be in.

When asked to combine all the standard kitchen necessities as well as a laundry into a 6 sqm kitchen in a small Vaucluse apartment, initially I felt slightly overwhelmed!  However after careful planning of customised joinery the client was thrilled with the outcome.

Slimline appliance options and the concealing of appliances in joinery where possible helped to maximize space and maintain a clean uncluttered look.  Neutral finishes and flush cupboard handles were used in the kitchen, with a deep blue glass splash back to highlight the water views.

I hope these few simple tips have been helpful!  Happy Designing!

Thanks for the tips Sophie! They really helped me when I redesigned my tiny kitchen…I especially loved the flush handles ideas so that I am not banging into them all the time!
