Fridges & Freezers

Every year, just as the weather starts to heat up, Darwin pays tribute to the humble fridge. Celebrating art, creativity, environmental sustainability, and the advantages of being able to keep your food refrigerated within a tropical climate, the Darwin Fridge Festival has been coyly described as ‘The World’s Coolest Festival’.

Festival Director Natalie Sprite explains:

“The Darwin Fridge Festival is a celebration of Darwin, its people and the humble fridge. The festival is a chance for everybody, everywhere, to make art. Paint a fridge. Glitter up an esky. Get Dramatic. Make music. Write a poem. Sculpt. Sing. Play. Put a group together or go solo. There’s prizes for the best fridge and best esky.”

Throughout October, fridges will be scattered across the Darwin waterfront, bringing the city to life and drawing tourists to the area. Here’s a sneak peak!

Louise is a writer with a passion for appliances, especially those that involve food. She is particularly fond of ovens because they enable her to make cake. Apart from baking Louise also enjoys listening to alternative music, dying her hair various unnatural colours and writing poetry that has been described (by her Nan) as 'quite nice'. On her appliance wish list is a Hello Kitty toaster and 'Hero' the barking dog-shaped hot dog maker. She lives in Sydney. Google+
