Weird and wonderful things we found at CES 2014

January 14th, 2014

Appliance Talk TV, Audio & Electronics

Every year, members of our team travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), providing us with a little glimpse into what to expect from the world of technology in the year to come.

The reports that have come through from our Audio Visual Guru on the ground, Jamie Dickson, are that in addition to all of the eye-popping new high tech TVs and other gadgetry on display, there are a few very odd things being showcased as well.

Here’s a small sample for your perusal:

iLuv’s Bubble Gum and Neon headphones

We love iLuv here at Appliances Online – they create handy docks and charging stations for smartphones, tablets and MP3 players in award-winning designs, meaning that music is always available in your home, and your speakers will look as great as they sound.

The new iLuv Bubble Gum range has been designed in a range of stylish colours to match your personality.  What’s more, they include a built-in microphone, and you can control your music via the built-in remote as well.

iLuv also presented the Neon range of headphones that glow in the dark in a variety of different colours, making them perfect for staying active at night, or fitting right into the crowd of certain nightclubs.

Jamie was able to confirm that these headphone ranges will be appearing on Australian shelves later in the year!

The Handbag TV

Mobile TV is becoming a big thing now, considering how easy it is to get your favourite digital movies onto your smartphone or tablet.  But did you ever consider wearing a TV as an accessory?

Hand-bag-TV-1

Someone did!  This little gadget on the floor at CES includes speakers and a built in DVD player, making it ideal for when you absolutely, positively have to watch that show, regardless of your location.

Sony’s waterproof gadgets

I always have a chuckle when I’m waiting for a train and it starts to rain, as all the commuters suddenly sprint for cover, seeking to protect their precious digital devices from Mother Nature’s soggy embrace.  Then I suddenly remember that I’ve got my phone in my hand, and dash off to join them.

That’s why these new gadget designs from Sony have been manufactured to work just as well during a period of precipitation as they do normally, and even survive short dips underwater, just in case you need to check your messages while doing a few laps.

Samsung’s Dual View TV

A lot of new TVs end up described using lots of technobabble, when all you really want to know is just what their shiny new features actually do.

That’s why we decided to show, not tell you about this new Samsung TV, which lets two people watch two different shows at the same time:

Cool, huh?  Let’s break it down:

  • This TV plays two sets of images at once on its screen.
  • Using polarising glasses (similar to the kind used for viewing 3D at the movies and on certain home TVs), viewers can watch what they want.  One can watch the footy, while the other can watch a drama.
  • Each set of glasses includes built-in headphones/speakers, allowing each viewer to hear their own soundtrack along with their movie.

You can imagine what this TV could mean.  No more arguing over what to watch when schedules clash – just watch both shows at the same time!  And if there are gamers in your house, multiplayer suddenly becomes a whole lot easier, with each player getting a whole screen to themselves.

According to Jamie, this TV has not been announced yet in Australia and Samsung could not confirm if this model will come to Australia in 2014.  But someday…

Mark joined Appliances Online in November 2011 and has since learned more than he ever expected to know about appliances. He enjoys looking for new and unusual ways for to solve everyday problems using typical household appliances. When he’s not toiling at the desks of Appliances Online and Big Brown Box, he tries to find time to write the next big bestseller and draw satirical cartoons, but is too easily distracted by TV, music and video games. Mark’s favourite appliance is the Dyson Groom Tool, as he loves the concept of vacuuming your dog. Google+
