Appliance Talk

Over the weekend, we all got to experience the pomp and ceremony of the diamond jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

We can only speculate on the protocols regarding appropriate gifts for such an occasion, but we do know that Her Majesty is rather tech-savvy, having accepted the gift of an iPod from US President Obama, and is reportedly interested in the iPad 2.

With this in mind, here’s our short list of appliances, gadgets and gizmos that we feel could be of use to the royal household:

Steam oven

One must eat healthily to maintain one’s health when one is head of state – it is understood that the Queen avoids garlic, spicy curries and raw shellfish where possible to ensure that she’s always at her best.

To prepare simple, healthy fare that’s fit for royalty, we would recommend a steam oven.  Steam cooking helps to gently lock in the nutrients of a meal, and this steam oven from Electrolux is stylishly-designed to look right at home in the royal kitchen.

Vacuum cleaner

Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the other royal residences all have so many rooms, containing many historical treasures of previous monarchs, that one could assume that they must be (pardon our French) a bugger to dust.

A Motorhead vacuum cleaner from Dyson would not only make light work of keeping the many royal rooms from getting dust, but its slim design would also mean that it could be discreetly stowed away when the tourists come to visit.

Four-door refrigerator

Those of us with large families understand how tough it can be to keep everyone fed and happy.  The same goes for those of us who regularly entertain. As Her Majesty has such a large and well-known family, and any distinguished guests to entertain, a great deal of many varieties of food must need to be on-hand in the palace kitchens, ready to be whipped up into a meal at a moment’s notice.

A Samsung four-door fridge offers plenty of storage space for different foods, and the Flex Zone drawer offers four different temperatures, so that every ingredient, from pheasant breast to the Queen’s own home-grown organic vegetables, can be stored in its best conditions.

Dishwasher

When the Crown advertised a position for a dishwasher in the royal kitchens, one cheeky Scottish MP remarked “Haven’t they heard of dishwashing machines?”

We’re sure that if the royals did require such an appliance, they’d opt for something along the lines of this model from Bosch, with a multitude of programs to manage the cleaning of everything from the finest royal china to the corgis’ bowls.

Wine Cabinet

While HM is known for her preference for simple fare, she does appreciate fine wine, with a favourite understood to be a particular sweet white muscat from the Ukraine.  What’s more, the royals are understood to be putting part of their estates to use as a vineyard and producing some vintages of their own.

Properly storing different types of wine requires special conditions, which is where a Vintec wine cabinet comes in.  Able to store many bottles at different temperatures, the entire royal cellar would be in good hands.

He enjoys looking for new and unusual ways for to solve everyday problems using typical household appliances. When he’s not toiling at the desks of Appliances Online and Big Brown Box, he tries to find time to write the next big bestseller and draw satirical cartoons, but is too easily distracted by TV, music and video games. Mark’s favourite appliance is the Dyson Groom Tool, as he loves the concept of vacuuming your dog. Google+
