Sunbeam has issued a statement in response to a media report that said one of its electric blankets had been “recently recalled.”

Sunbeam has come out in defense of its electric blanket safety standards after a TV report on 11 April about unsafe appliances.

It comes in the same week that police suspect a faulty electric blanket caused an apartment in Bondi, Sydney to go up in flames.

Sunbeam said that the report incorrectly labelled a product recall as ‘recent’, when in fact a voluntary recall was undertaken by the small appliance company almost 10 years ago, in 2003.

“Sunbeam wishes to reassure its retailers and customers that the Company upholds the highest of safety standards,” said David Jackson, CEO of Sunbeam Australia.

“Our electric blankets carry exclusive SleepPerfect Technology which includes nine levels of safety protection, making Sunbeam Safe & Sound electric blankets safer than any other.”

According to Sunbeam, the misleading story featured a range of products listed as ‘recent recalls’ which included an image of a Sunbeam Electric Blanket with the words ‘recalled’ in red across the product.

Sunbeam’s statement says:

  • No research or contact was made by producers with Sunbeam direct or through Sunbeam’s PR agency relative to this story or to any other products.
  • The story stated the product was a “recent recall” – more than 10 years ago does not constitute “recent” and is misleading to consumers.
  • The heat controllers in the previous model of Electric Blankets have not been produced since 2001/2002.
  • Sunbeam has had no other recalls of electric blankets since this recall.
  • The story did not highlight this was a voluntary recall. This was a company initiated action and was praised at the time by key authorities.
  • Sunbeam’s rigorous safety standards are among the highest in the world and its Electric Blankets carry exclusive SleepPerfect technology featuring nine levels of
    safety protection.
