Smart vacuum cleaner counts calories

Appliance News Vacuums & Floor Care

At Appliances Online there’s nothing we like more than quirky vacuuming news.

But this one has made us wonder: are smart appliances colluding to keep us trim?

There’s the LG fridge which politely suggests we reach for a healthy option, and the Samsung oven that can tell us how many calories the meal cooking contains. Now, a new vacuum cleaner will work out how many of those calories we’ve burnt doing the cleaning!

A UK company, Gtech, has released the AirRam, a cordless and energy efficient vacuum that can help its owner get a fitness plan together.

Hey there, looking fit!

Knowing that household chores use Tim Tam-fueld energy is one thing, having it officially counted and confirmed, by a machine no less, is another. (It only works out to about one Tim Tam per hour of vacuuming, by the way.)

The AirRam smart feature works by plugging the vacuum into a computer via USB. This launches the ironically named ‘AirBrain’ software. Cleaning aficionados may then watch maintenance videos, get cleaning tips, work out what the energy savings have been compared to different branded vacuums as well as counting the calories from different cleaning sessions.

Gtech is eager to point out the vacuum’s energy savings, claiming that the cordless machine only uses 100 Watts of power, about 20 times less than its competitors.

Being limited to 40 minutes operation is no problem either, says Gtech. The vacuum works so well apparently, one can whip around the house twice as fast.

Having once had to sit on the washing machine to stop it from bouncing into oblivion, Keri is today delighted with the new (smoother running) technologies that make housework easier every day. A self-confessed lazy-bones, Keri seeks out quirky inventions that ease the human workload, such as the robotic vacuum cleaner (wow). And as soon as someone figures out a Jetsons-like self-cleaning house, she will happily lay her pen to rest and retire from appliance journalism. Until then, her pick is a fridge that will tell her smartphone when it's time to pick up more beer on the way home. Magic.

  1. Too much filtration reduces the air-flow of your vacuum cleaner. If the wind doesn’t blow, the dust will not fly.
