In one of its latest consumer research surveys the fellas at Canstar Blue have pitched some of Australia’s most used laundry detergents against each other to discover which is the most popular with us consumers, and why.

So, which scrubs up best?

Separating the detergents into liquids and dry powders the survey reveals ALDI as a top choice for liquid detergents and Biozet Attack for dry powders.

Laundry liquids

Other squeaky clean contenders included Earth Choice, Dynamo, Hurricane, Radiant, Omo and Cold Power for liquids and Drive, Omo, Radiant, Fab, Coles, Cold Power and Spree for liquids – in every case these detergents achieved at least a satisfactory ranking of three out of five stars in the categories.

Laundry powders

The detergents were measured for their value for money, quality of clean, number of washes, environmental friendliness, smell and the feel of clothes after a wash.

Other cleaning matters

It turns out Australians are pretty casual about doing the washing. The survey found that over a third of respondents don’t separate whites from colours when doing a wash and almost half of Generation Y respondents admitted to ruining an expensive item of clothing in the washing machine.

Three in five respondents said they overlooked the dry cleaners and threw their clothes in the wash, albeit on a delicate cycle.

However some customers are exhibiting caution when selecting laundry products. Allergies are often caused by certain laundry cleaners and Canstar Blue said people are taking the time to check phosphate or chemical levels of their laundry detergent before making a purchase.

Having once had to sit on the washing machine to stop it from bouncing into oblivion, Keri is today delighted with the new (smoother running) technologies that make housework easier every day. A self-confessed lazy-bones, Keri seeks out quirky inventions that ease the human workload, such as the robotic vacuum cleaner (wow). And as soon as someone figures out a Jetsons-like self-cleaning house, she will happily lay her pen to rest and retire from appliance journalism. Until then, her pick is a fridge that will tell her smartphone when it's time to pick up more beer on the way home. Magic.
