Channel Nine’s The Block is back for its fifth season starting tonight at 7pm. With it, a range of new kitchen renovation ideas will be revealed.

The reality home renovation TV series pitches eight Australian couples against each other to redo dilapidated terrace houses in inner-city South Melbourne.

The contestants have 10 weeks and $125,000 to create, design, plan, budget, execute and sell the terrace home. $20,000 is allocated to the kitchen.

The most profitable house sale wins the competition, and in doing so scores the profit plus $100,000.

Realising that the kitchen holds endless investment potential as well as decorating opportunities, options and products the contestants will need to consider which appliances to purchase and install, shelving, as well as tapware.

Budding home renovators will be watching the show to see what mistakes the contestants make along the way.

Similarly, picking up tips of the trade will be worthwhile. From abiding by council restrictions to paying trades people, the contestants will face typical challenges that all home renovators can learn from.

Speaking from the Brisbane Home Show recently, building designer Peter Latemore said that there are dozens of ways to renovate a house and it’s good to consider all of them, even those that don’t immediately seem plausible due to size or budget restrictions.

“You’d be surprised at what some councils allow,” said Latemore.

“It’s best not to assume anything and explore all your options.”
