Fisher & Paykel and Breville have joined Miele in the 2012 Choice awards that celebrate excellent customer service and product reliability.

The recent 2012 awards have not only highlighted Miele for the best vacuum cleaner brand, but Fisher & Paykel for best fridge brand and Breville for its Fast Slow Cooker.

Fisher & Paykel received the coveted award after two years of fridge testing across numerous brands and models. Additionally, a 7,000-strong reliability survey was used to understand customers’ expectations.

“Our test results account for a range of expectations that members have when buying a fridge, including maintaining steady temperatures, keeping those even throughout compartments, offering a good range of temperature options and having optimum temperatures on their recommended or factory setting,” said Choice’s Matthew Steen, team leader for white goods.

“You also expect fridges to stay cool in summer and winter, be inexpensive to run and quiet. Many Fisher & Paykel models tick all these boxes and so deserve the bouquet.”

Meanwhile, Breville has stood out for the Fast Slow Cooker, considered a “one-pot wonder” by Choice reviewers.

“The Breville Fast Slow Cooker is a one-pot wonder – it’s four appliances in one. You can sear your meat and vegetables in it ready for a long slow cook and have a meal ready when you get home,” said Fiona Mair, Choice home economist.

“Having tested cooking appliances for 15 years there are very few small ones I recommend.

“As well as its cooking performance, I consider how versatile a product is, whether it will take up precious cupboard or bench space, how often it’ll be used, whether this method of cooking can be done on a cooktop or oven, and, basically, whether it’s really necessary.”

“Or, you can cook comfort foods in a quarter of the usual time. It also steams vegetables and rice, and is so easy to use, with comprehensive instructions and recipes.”

“This appliance is great for the busy family and costs about $200 – less than buying separate specialised products. And don’t forget, these methods of cooking suit cheaper cuts of meats as well as legumes and pulses.”

Having once had to sit on the washing machine to stop it from bouncing into oblivion, Keri is today delighted with the new (smoother running) technologies that make housework easier every day. A self-confessed lazy-bones, Keri seeks out quirky inventions that ease the human workload, such as the robotic vacuum cleaner (wow). And as soon as someone figures out a Jetsons-like self-cleaning house, she will happily lay her pen to rest and retire from appliance journalism. Until then, her pick is a fridge that will tell her smartphone when it's time to pick up more beer on the way home. Magic.
