Take a break this Earth Hour by switching off your household appliances.

This Saturday night at 8.30pm lights will be switched off around the world as millions unite in support of the annual environmental event – Earth Hour.

It is also an opportunity to unplug domestic appliances and take a break from vacuuming, washing clothes and cooking. While at it, why not switch off from the online world?

A break from domestic duties? Even a climate change skeptic can get on board with that, surely!

Businesses such as hotels are also encouraging their guests to turn off non-essential lights and appliances.

The Brisbane Central Sofitel will be switching off external signage, lobby lights, major restaurant and bar lighting, and “will be encouraging guests to support Earth Hour by turning off all unnecessary lighting and appliances in their rooms.”

As the event evolves from lights off to appliances off, all sorts of environmentally aware schemes are being linked to it.

This year the Sydney Opera House has pledged to go on a month long ‘paper diet’ where staff try to use as little paper as possible.

Sexy Hour

Since it’s inception in Sydney in 2007 the WWF-motivated movement, which hopes to raise climate change awareness, has inspired over 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries to turn the lights off for one hour, between 8.30pm and 9.30 pm, on the last Saturday of March.

It is held at this time to make the most of the equinox (which only happens twice a year) so that most cities are in darkness as the hour approaches.

Sofia loves to keep things clean. Vacuum cleaners, giant washing machines and jumbo dishwashers hum away in her abode daily. Obsessive? Maybe. Passionate about appliances? For sure! She has been writing about appliance trends and happenings since 2010.
