A national energy standard across all whitegoods has been announced by the Federal Climate Change Minister Greg Combet.

The new rules will affect whitegoods manufacturers, who will soon have a single set of energy efficiency standards to meet, according to an AAP report.

This will affect appliances such as air conditioners, dishwashers and fridges and it means the end of different rules applying to different Australian regions.

The announcement was made shortly after a meeting of all the climate change ministers and was signed off on Friday.

It will still need to be approved by the states and territories and the federal parliament will have to pass legislation.

It is hope the new rules will be in place by October of this year.

“It will help the competitiveness and efficiency of our domestic manufacturers in particular to know that there’s one set of standards and one set of compliance arrangements and one form of registration,” Combet said.

According to the report, Combet said that the change will also bring about $5 billion worth of economic benefit.
