Chest freezers are perfect for long term bulk storage, making grocery shopping cheaper. They can also act as a backup to your main fridge to ensure you never run out of food, and they’re particularly good for storing large bags of ice.

Our chest freezers range in size from 150L up to around 700L. A household of 1-2 people could use a chest freezer of 150-300L, while a home with 3-4 people may need 300-500L. More than 5 people in a home will require more than 500L of freezer storage.

Bear in mind that the larger the freezer, the more energy it will use. Not only does it cost money to run a half-empty freezer, it's not particularly good for the environment either.

As with any major purchase, make sure you measure the space where you'll be keeping your freezer before making a decision. Although the kitchen is an obvious choice, you might not have the floor space for it. A rumpus room or spare room could be a good solution, so long as it is easy to access and allows enough room for venting (approximately 2 cm from the wall).

Many people choose to place their chest freezer in the garage, which has the added advantage of making transferring groceries from the car to the freezer extra easy. However if your garage isn't insulated, your freezer will use more power to keep cool during summer.
